Question about Harley Davidson XLH 1000 Sportster Motorcycles

1979 sporty, Ironhead model, changed the rockerbox gaskit, when I put coil back on that fancy crom cover shorted something out, not sure, electronic ign. so I am sure it could be anything, I took cover of of electronic ignition cover were point would be, weird looking not like new one I got, anyhow I want to change it to point, screw that electronic ****, yea it's great when it works, but 50 miles from no were I can steal a old chevy set of points, not true with electronic ****.

You will need to remove the sensor plate in the nose cone and install a stock points plate with advance unit. You will probably need to change the coil back to a 5 ohm, most electronic ign have 3 ohm coil.

Have a 67 ironhead. Any reason I can't install a generator from an 83?


nope if it bolts up make sure the wires are red (A) armature (F) field and battery pos + make sure u polarize the genny by making a jumper wire from (A) ON GENNY TO POSITVE ON BATTERY TILL IT SPARKS NO LONGER THEN CHECK VOLTAGE SHOULD PUT OUT 12V TO 14 V WHILE RPM IS 2000

Ihave a 1979 1000cc sporty with a as supper e shorty carb that was revolt last winter it was running fine till last month it's been back fireing from the exhaust pipes and air filter the plugs are good...


Backfiring out of the exhaust pipes usually indicates an ignition problem. What happens is that the fuel air mixture in the cylinder is not burned and is exhausted into the exhaust pipes. The next time the cylinder fires and the exhaust valves open and allows the residual flame to exhaust into the pipe, it ignites the unburned fuel in the pipe from the previous misfire. What kind of igniton system is on the bike. And, spark plugs will foul within minutes in an Ironhead Sporty if the mixture is too rich. Your super "E" is still a quite large carburetor for that engine. It should have a #26.5 slow jet and a #66 main jet. Make sure that your accelerator pump is not adjusted to put too much fuel in the cylinder when you open the throttle. Go to S&S's tech site and download files 51-1012 and 51-1013. This will tell you everything you need to know about your carb. http://www.sscycle.com/instructions/instructionslist.php?x_cat=24 If you are running open drag pipes on your Ironhead, you don't have enough backpressure on the exhaust system and you've probably got a flat spot at about 55-60 mph. If so, look on the backside of the exit end of the pipes. There may be a hole in the pipe for the bolt to hold the baffles in the pipe. If this hole is open, install a 1/4" bolt that is 1 1/4" long in the pipe with three nuts on the bolt on the inside of the pipe. Put one of these bolts in each pipe. This will give you just enough backpressure to almost eliminate the flat spot and the bike will perform much better. Due to the hemispherical design of the heads, the Ironhead must have some backpressure. I hope this helps.

I have a 1979 harley davidson ironhead sportster 1000 cc . I have had 3 condensors, 2 sets of points installed this riding season. What might be causing this issue ?


The '79 model came with electronic ignition and someone has converted it back to a points type ignition system. I'm betting that they did not change the coil. Check the resistance of the primary of the coil. It should be between 5-6 Ohms of resistance for use with points. A coil designed for use with an electronic igntion uses a coild with 2-3 ohms of resistance in the primary winding.

I have a 1979 xlh sporty took bike apart to paint on re assembly i hooked up coil wires wrong had no spark fixed wires but could i have killed my coil still no spark.


Ok to test the coil, remove all wires from the small terminals on the ends. Use a digital volt ohm meter and put the function switch in OHMS, R X 1. Touch one meter lead to each of the small terminals. Your meter should read between 2-3 ohms as the '79 model had electronic ignition.

To further test the coil, reconnect the two white wires to one of the small terminals. On the other side, make a jumper wire. Connect the jumper wire to the other small terminal. Put the plug wires into the towers and put a set of spark plugs in the wires lying on the heads with a good ground. Now, turn the switch one. The terminals with the white wires on it should be "Hot". MOMENTARILY, ground the jumper to the engine and take it back loose. When you take the wire loose, you should see a spark at the plugs. If you do, the coil is good and your problem lies elsewhere.

How to install a rear brake switch on a 1972 harley ironhead sporster?


Been a long time since I've worked on one of those but the '72 model Sporty has mechanical brakes on the rear. There is a rod that runs from the rear brake pedal back to the rear brake lever on the brake backing plate. The rear brake light switch was a mechanical pull or push type switch. I seem to remember the '72 as being a pull type with a spring that connected in the brake rod and when the rear brake pedal was depressed, it pulled the switch making the brake light come on.

I bought a 160/80 16 from Grape Valley Coppers in Masterton about $150.00 Ph 0272557932 063702213 put it on a 6" rim had to off set spockets and modified caliper also offset shock mounts
It fitted inside the swingarm with a little stretching not much clearances but seems to go all right
