Question about 2000 Harley Davidson FXDL Dyna Low Rider
This is typical of a lot of Harleys. This is what we refer to the enigne "puking" oil. The reason it does this is that the engine has been sitting for a long period of time. The oil tank is located higher in the frame than the oil pump on the side of the engine. There is a check ball in the oil pump but sometimes it doesn't stop the oil from seeping past and getting into the cam chest of the engine. When this happens, there is more oil in the cam chest than the oil pump can pump out quickly. So, some of it is blown out the crankcase vent and winds up where ever the vent hose terminates, either in the air filter or on the ground.
To fix the problem, you'll need to "reseat" the check ball and install a new one. I've seen it done before with varying results. The best thing to do is not allow the bike to set for long periods of time. If you're not going to ride it, at least come out and start the engine about once a week to keep the oil pumped into the tank.
