How long has it been not running.

download a manual. empty all fuel out of the tank. add new fuel.
open up both the bleed/drain valves at the base of the carb and drain old fuel.

leave the valves open and kick the bike over so fresh fuel cycles through. close valves.

check / change spark plugs.

use the choke and not the throttle when starting it up

1983 f150 with 351 windsor. Recent problem of bogging down when climbing moderate hills. Also sounds of ticking noise, lifters or manifolds leak? Any help much appreciated.

A leaking exhaust manifold could make a ticking noise. So could a lifter or valve. The exhaust noise would be louder under load.
If the carb is running too lean, or you have a vac leak, the lean fuel mixture could make the exhaust leak worse, and cause the loss of power.

My chevy malibu wont start. it turns over but wont start. tried new battery, not the problem. changed fuel filter, still the same thing, turns over, but wont start.

Hey Debbie. When a car wont start, there can be many things that can cause this. It can get real frustrating real quick. I will give you some things that it may be. If you are good at cars, you need to test for fuel and spark. Make sure fuel is going to the engine and make sure your ignition is sparking. If you are not good on cars, check these. Make sure your fuel pump is kicking on when you first turn the key. You should hear a humming sound for a second or two. If you do, the pump is working. If not, it may be bad. If you haven't changed the fuel filter in a long time, it may be clogged. A filter is cheap, usually 10-20 dollars. A fuel pump is 100-200 dollars. Check your air filter and make sure the engine is getting air. The filter may be clogged/real dirty. You could check the fuel pump fuse/relay, only if you didn't hear the pump. Your timing belt may have broke. You need to spray starter fluid into your carburetor. You will have to take off the air hose to do so. Once you spray it in, try to start the car. If it starts and dies, you have a fuel issue. If it stays the same and doesn't start, you will have to check the ignition system. This included the spark plugs/coils, distributor, dist.cap, rotor, cam sensor , crank sensor, ecm. I know it is a lot to take in but it could be any of these. Let me know if you know the engine good. There are things you can check, if you know how to check them. The only way to check for the problem is by checking each possibility. If you have a question Debbie, let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a 2000 FXST while riding about 30-35 mph I noticed a swishing sound coming from the bottom end, sounded like the primary chain was making noise.A few miles later sound got louder, almost like...

The primary chain is supposed to have 5/8 to 7/8 inch up and down play in the top run of the chain with the engine cold. I think it's 1/2 to 5/8 inch hot but I've never set the tension on a hot primary chain.

But, if you say you heard a crunching noise, then the engine started running rough and popping out the exhaust, I'd suspect something to do with the ignition timing. The ignition timing is controlled by the pulses from the crank position sensor on the right flywheel.

If I were you, I'd pull the primary cover, take the compensator sprocket, primary chain, and clutch assembly off, pull the rotor and the stator of the alternator. Then pull the sprocket shaft seal out and take a look at the Timken bearing. While you've got everything off, take the plugs out and turn the engine over and feel for any roughness. It may be time for an engine overhaul. I've only seen Timken bearings fail in one Shovelhead engine but they do fail. Hopefully, you'll find something much simplier and less expensive than this wrong.

Good luck

Have an 85 chevy 4x4. I just had the 305 engine rebuilt with a new intake and carb. It was working fine for a couple days and one morning I went to start er up and the engine just cranked and cranked,...

When you turn the key front. Listen for the fuel pump to prime. It should sound like a low humming noise that lasts about 3 seconds. If it does then check for spark by pulling one of our sparkplug wires and putting an extra spark plug in it. Place the end of the wire down somewhere safe and crank the motor. If you can't seek spark in the plug, it is most likely your coil failing. So, check fuel pump and fuel pump relays first, then spark. Good Luck.

Truck will idle about 15 seconds and dies or bogs down

You need to take a pressure and volume measurement, most fuel pressures for a carburetor engine are 3 to 7 psi, then you need to make sure the volume is consistent for a period of time, 20 to 30 second of engine cranking while the fuel is transferred to a container of some sort, make sure the ignition system is disabled to prevent you from blowing up the property.

Makes real bad engine noise at 1000 rpm

what kind of sound? tinny metallic or knocking? possibly have some very loose exhaust heat shields. reclamping or tack-welding usually does the trick.
