The only to find out for sure is to pull the cover off. As for a screw bouncing off the rocker cover, it could be. There are some 1/4" bolts in the lower plate. If one of these bolts broke or the threads stripped out, the bolt could be bouncing in the cover. At any rate, we could sit here and guess all night long. The only way to find out what it is, is to pull the cover. Let me know if you need any advice.

Good Luck

Ticking noise from engine on 1997 kia sportage

Sounds like your problem might be bad lifter or bad rocker arm spring. Either way you'll probably have to remove the valve cover to check both. You might also go to a parts place and purchase an oil additive to see if it might help free up the lifter...if thats what it is.

Rattling on top end back cylider

The only thing under the rocker boxes is the rockers and the upper part of the heads with the valve springs. Getting to this area is not that difficult.

Remove the fuel tank and seat. Then, remove the six bolts that holt the top and middle rocker box covers on. Now, you're at the rocker plate with the rocker arms in it. You can also see the tops of the valve springs. Look and see if there is anything that might be causing your noise.

Now, keep in mind that a Harley engine is of an old design. It is a pushrod type engine with rocker arms that open and close the valves. They are going to make a little noise. Now, if you're having to get close to the rocker box to hear the noise, it's probably nothing to worry about. But, if you can hear the noise stand away from the bike a few feet, you may have a problem. But most things that might break or come loose under the rocker box will usually effect the way the engine runs.

Also, you could have an exhaust leak. It makes a "tick, tick, tick" type noise. Tighten the nuts on the two studs snugly but don't break them off.

Good Luck

Valve train noise

The ticking sound is most likely caused by uneven wear on the cam lobes. The next time you've got the valve covers off, take a look at the cams and you will likely see scuff marks on one or more of the high-points of the camshaft lobes. This can cause a ticking sound each time that part of the lobe comes in contact with the rocker arm. The only cure for this would be to replace the cam and rocker arms - which is not worth the many $$ it will cost. The noise may be annoying, but isn't anything to worry about. My Goldwing started making a ticking sound at about 90,000 miles - and continues to this day, now with more than 169,000 miles on the engine.
Uneven cam lobe wear can also cause lateral movement of the rocker arms - and a ticking sound as the rockers move slightly sideways on their shafts (note the springs on the shafts that hold the rockers lightly to one side).
I should also mention that pitted valve stem tips can also cause a ticking noise. In any event, do not run the engine with less than the specified .004" valve tappet clearance as this can cause valve damage and compression loss.

Vortec 4.3 Ticking that is present at start-up and speeds up as I accelerate, what would cause this?

If you have good oil pressure, a few things come to mind, first it could be a loose rocker, secound it could be a woren or broken rocker, third it could be a weak or calaps lifter. If it sounds like its lower in the engine like around the oil pan it could be a rod or maine problem. But you say its a ticking noise witch leads me to believe its a valve trane problem.

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE STICKY LASH ADJUSTER(LIFTER)..MANY MILES ON IT?HAVE YOU BEEN GOOD TO CHANGE OIL AND FILTER?TRY CHANGING THE OIL AND FILTER AND ADDING AN OIL SUPPLEMENT ..IF THIS DOESN'T WORK,YOU WILL HAVE TO ISOLATE WHICH BANK OF ENGINE NOISE IS COMING FROM,REMOVE VALVE COVER AND YOU CAN TO SEE WHICH ONE(S) ARE MAKING NOISE..PUSH DOWN ON EACH ROCKER ARM..A BAD ONE WILL BE SOFT..A GOOD ONE WILL BE HARD..NO LASH..TO REPLACE..YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFT BOLTS AND ROCKER SHAFTS..YOU CAN PURCHASE ONLY THE ONE(S) YOU NEED..BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU REMOVE ROCKER SHAFTS..THE LIFTERS CAN FALL OUT..GET A STICKY GREASE TO HOLD THEM IN ROCKER ARMS DURING REASSEMBLY..I HOPE THIS HELPS

Loud ticking sound all of the time

Are you sure its not an exhaust leak ..? They can sometimes sound like a ticking noise and the noise will change with temperatures of engine.. ? also if you can borrow a stethicope from someone which is used in automotive repair alot (different than what your doctor uses) this will help you pinpoint the problem .. It sounds to me with out hearing it you have a loose rocker arm possably .. If this is the case this is a easy fix and very inexpensive. just figure which side its coming from take the valve cover off and tighten it till it stops ticking and then give it 1/4 turn. Holler if you need more Jerry
