Question about 2005 Honda VT 750 DC Shadow Spirit

1 Answer

The bike runs great at higher speeds, but for in town driving it speeds up and slows down with no change in throttle position. It sat idle for a 4 month period, but I drained the tank and have since run three bottles of Lucus carb cleaner through it. Just before the idle period I had added Cobra pipes and a belt drive conversion done with a dynotune. When I was able to ride again I was faced with the above situation. The shop that did the work says I should not be having any problems but will be happy to "check it out" for $$$$$

Have you ran all of the Lucas carb cleaner through it? Or is it still in your tank? If you still have some in your tank I would drain the tank, put premium gas in and try again. When you have the Lucas cleaner mixed in the gas it burns differently than gas. If you have no more Lucas in the gas, then it could be that the Lucas cleaned the carb and got some debris in the jet of one of the carbs. When you use carb cleaner it breaks the debris loose and it must then pass through the engine. I would suggest making sure all of the Lucas is out of the tank first. It is the cheapest.

2000 mercury villager, runs a fast idle. whether cold or warm the idle remains at a high idle speed, it even pulls with the brake applied.

Could be a vac leak, or a dirty throttle body, or a faulty idle air control valve. The computer controls idle speed by regulating the amount of air into the intake. Could also be something pulling on the throttle cable such as the cruise control.

Low rough idle speed , back firing when slowing down or gearing down runs great at higher speeds and idles after it warms up but idle speed is very low. thank you

Check for an air leak at either the exhaust manifold or the intake manifold. Backfiring on decceleration usually indicates a lean issue but can also be caused by a leaking exhaust gasket. Rough idle can be caused by an air leak as well. The easiest way to find a leak is to spray carburetor cleaner around the intake on the cylinder head. If the engine speed picks up you have found your issue. Also what are the modifications if any on this bike?

I have a Kawasaki Ninja, ZX6r, 1997 F3. The bike starts great and rev's great when standing. At high rev's its as sweet as a nut. The problem seems to be when riding the bike and the revs are below 4,000....

There are adjustments on carbs for low speed air intake (air mixture screw)find out factory settings and reset that mixture.Sounds to me like those adjustments are out of sink.If so the bike will run very bad from idle to about 1/4 throttle then run great from there up to full throttle.this definitly sounds like carb problem.

Starts but will only keep running while choke is on

Most likely your slow (idle, pilot, whichever name you prefer) jets are plugged up in your carburetors. If the bike was stored improperly, or old/dirty gas was in the tank, these jets get plugged up pretty easily. One if not all are probably affected. The slow jet is where your bike pulls gas while it has a closed throttle position. Its the smallest jet in the carbs. When you twist the throttle, the needle (blocking the main jet from being used) opens up and allows gas to pass it and up into the vacuum of your carb and into your engine. If the idle jets are plugged you will usually notice that if you give the bike throttle it will run great in the higher RPM (3000+) but will die and be "glitchy" or boggy when going from no throttle to open throttle. You can try to cheat a carb clean by getting some carb cleaner and spraying that down the carbs, and using seafoam or equivalent to get those jets clean, but its always a better bet to see whats going on inside and clean those things so you get your throttle response back. Goodluck.

My bike runs rough idleing and at slow speeds. It

Check for intake leaks where the carburetor manufolds connect to the heads, when it is running at idle dpray WD40 around the area if the idle increases there is a intake leak.
reolace the gasket/gaskets,and since the carb will be off clean it or have a mechanic do it.

94 Lincoln TC engine stalls when slowing/stopping

Most common cause of stalling for Lincolns in that era is the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). It regulates fuel mixture, idle speed etc. A bad TPS will usually act up in one of two ways:
  1. When cold, car continually stalls
  2. When warm, car stalls when slowing down (especially if AC is on)
As far as valve cover oil leak, it's a problem that should be addressed to keep oil from fouling your spark plugs but highly unlikely to be the cause of your stalling problem. Hope this answers your question. All the best.
