Question about 2004 Suzuki LS 650 Savage

Why does it back fire when you let off of the gas. I had it in the shop and they say they all do . That there is nothing wrong with the carb. How ever if I leave the choke on the very first notch it doesn't back fire.

I was told once by a Suzuki mechanic that all LS650s were that way. They were designed with too much backpressure. Mine backfires frequently, often on deceleration. I also have extreme discoloration of the exhaust pipe from the engine back to the foot peg. The only way to fix this apparently is to get a new exhaust pipe and retune the carb. This should also boost your power just slightly

It sounds like it is running a little weak. Is it the original suzuki exhaust? If not, then it may need re-jetting to suit.
If you are using a little choke and it stops the backfire as well as running correctly through the rev range, then I would look at carb adjustments.
You could go one size up on the main jet (going up in size will richen the mixture). The other alternative is to look at the needle in the carb, as often they are adjustable. At the top of the needle there is often a selction of positions you can place a clip in. Moving the clip down will raise the needle and richen the mixture. This will not cause as big a change as increasing the main jet size, but could work for you.
I am assuming your happy to take the carb apart to do this. Its not a difficult job, but I would invest in a workshop manual.
Finally, check your exhaust is sealed at all the joints (if any).
Many bikes do indeed backfire when on the overun, normally when a more 'sporty' exhaust has been fitted.
Good luck!

Honda valkyrie vacum diagram

Sounds to me, if there is nothing mechanically wrong with the carbs (carbon build up, broken choke spring), that they need to be synchronized. You'll need a vaccuum gauge and some aquarium tubing and a lot of patience. I'd check the spark plug condition to verify what cylinder it is. If it is indeed cylinder 3 (factory set carb), it will be either choke spring is broken or jets are clogged up with bad gas or dirt. For instructions on synchronizing carbs go here: http://www.valkyrieriders.com/shoptalk/carlsync.htm
I've been there, done that.

1983 CJ-7 Had someone put water in gas tank? Blew out lines, rebuilt carb and cleaned out, cleaned tank, gas dryer and new fuel, new fuel filter (clear), new fuel pump, replaced rotor cap, plug wires,...

You put something back the wrong way.....any amount of water in the tank, carb or whatever WILL NOT cause the engine not to fire.....check any wiring/rewiring you did for accuracy

What is causing a back fire in the throttle body? My 93 safari wil run if pumping on the gas but dies as soon as u let off the pedal..

That is usually a timing problem but it could be the carburetor in need of a rebuild. If I remember correct GM was using Rochester Carbs on that model and they are notorious for this problem.

Engine idles smoothly but at higher rpm it faulters and back fires out of exhaust and runs rough

back fires out of exhaust implies too much gas at high end. caused by : dirty air filter, carb setup wrong(high float), ignition trouble.
a miss from poor ignition on the next stroke can be too wet even when the carb is set too lean so rule out the ignition problem. rule out the air filter problem. clean carb.

Have a 08 sportsman 500 HO. Can get gas to fuel pump but not to carb. Cleaned carb wtih carb cleaner, put back together and it fired for a second.( leftover carb cleaner I'm sure) Tried to start...

I was just working on an 08. They have a vacuum operated fuel pump. All of the dealers I spoke with said that a fuel pump going bad is uncommon. I would check to see if the vacuum line is craked. When you take the inlet gas line from the carb and turn it over, you should get a pulsating flow of fuel. Again, check vacuum hose first then assume the fuel pump.

Gas has most likely gummed up in the carb over winter and you should spend a few $$$ on a can of carb cleaner and get some of the gunky gas clogging the Jets outta the carb. If you need to find out how to clean the carb, first find out what kind of carb it is. Then you could find a video on youtube er somthing of a similar carb and then clean it out. thats what was wrong with my scooter and it fired right up after that.
