In the speedo drive there is a flat metal plate looks like a washer.it has one flat on the inside if the speedo has become siesed the flat will be worn down and the cable will not turn.at the top of the cable where the speedo is conected there is a bearing that often gets stuck if you remove the speedo from bike and add penatrating oil you may be able to get the bearing turn ing again.i hammered the drive plate on mine and took the speedo apart in order to free it up ,is glued together at the factory is surgical in nature be carefull.

The speedometer in my 1965 Chevy C10 pickup will only read to 40 MPH

Replacing the speedometer cable could be tricky as if it is not run properly could cause the cable to break inside the housing. The cable should be in a position without sharp curves and should be as straight as possible.
Go under the car and take off the speedo connection at the transmission. Try to pull out the inside cable to see if it is broken.

My speedometer wont work but everything elsle is fine

If your car isn't moving, the speedometer wont work. Make sure you are moving.

Seriously, a little more info would be nice.....but to start with, the speedometer cable is connected to the back of the speedometer and to the transmission. Have you removed the ends to see if there is any damage? You should be able to spin the cable end on the transmission and get the speedometer to register a speed.

Digital speedometer not working

If the speedometer appears to quit working and the trip odometer also quit working, It could be a simple problem. Check your speedometer cable connection. It may have come loose. If not, the cable may be broken. You can check this by unscrewing the connector below the speedometer and try turning your front wheel by hand. This cable should turn as you turn the front wheel. If not, then the cable is broke or there is a problem with the speedometer pickup on your front wheel.

Until you get your speedometer working again, try to be careful with your speeds. Driving at the speed of other traffic is USUALLY a safe bet. If in doubt, try driving a bit slower and use the right-hand land (in US) if applicable.

Chrysler lhs transmission wont shift and my speedometer isnt working but all the other instruments are. what could it be?

It may be your speed sensor. When the speed sensor is not working, the speedometer will not work, the car will not shift past second gear, and the engine light should appear.

Spedomoeter jumps up and down works fine sometimes especially in the morning all other gauges work

The speedometer Gear drive may be going bad. Or it could be if your speedometer is cable driven the cable just needs lubed. On the side of your transmission near the rear you will see a small gear box with wires or a cable. Place a pan under it and remove it from trans. Check gear to see if it is chewed or worn. If not and you have a cable driven speedometer use graphite cable lube on cable. If this don't work it could be in the cruise control or speedometer.

Stuck speedometer on 92 jeep cherokee

Check all harness connections and clean them with contact cleaner. Corrosion on connector contacts is not as obvious as the crud that grows on battery terminals usually only appearing as dark residue only. The sender on the transmission or transfer case is basically a small generator that makes voltage. essentially your speedometer is a volt meter with a different face on it. either it has failed or there is a connection breakdown somewhere.

1990 wrangler YJ speedometer doesn't work ( electrical?)

Ok...if i have this right, you have a cable driven speedometer with a gizmo connected in between which you bypassed with one continuous cable. and the speedometer still does not work? If so, find another working unit and replace it. If you find a unit with a reading close to what yours reads, that's fine. keep the reciept for the unit and just make a note on what actual miles were at the change. A dealer would need to be more precise but its over 20 years old! no one is going to care waht the miles are and it's more important to know hwo fast you are going!!!
