Question about 1996 Yamaha Royal Star XVZ 1300 A

When i am in 3rd or higher gear and accelerate i can feel the clutch slipping. could it be the type of oil like i herd or is the clutch bad

If it's the original 1996 clutch I'd be surprised if it wasn't slipping. If the clutch & clutch springs are actually still good & working properly, make sure the oil you're using doesn't contain any "friction modifiers". AMSOIL & other companies make synthetic lubricants without friction modifiers. If your oil or an oil additive has friction modifiers, just drain the crankcase and replace the oil with the proper stuff and that may well cure the problem. Replace the filter too.

3rd gear SEEMS to slip

Either the clutch slips or the gear jumps out. Chech your free travel in the clutch lever the end should move an inch before feeling clutch tension.
Drain the oil from the gear case and observe any metal fragments. anything larger than powder is serious damage and will get worse.
Worn gears, bearings fragmenting will destroy all the transmission as the chunks circulate in oil.
Flush with a quart of motor flush , Naptha, or diesel fuel. and drain completely
. REFILL to mark with proper specified gear oil.

99 rm 250 rides and runs great but when you shift into 3rd gear it does not grab it physically goes into gear but seems to slip! Some say bad clutch plates others say bad gear no idea any suggestions??

Hi, it sounds like your clutch friction plates have either worn out or, someone has put the wrong oil in it, some car oils make the clutch slip in high gears.

My 1995 sentra shifts fine in all gears but when i accelerate in 4th or 5th gear it the rpms wind up and the car doednt real respond feels like its in the accelerater do i need a new clutch

Sounds like the clutch is slipping. If the clutch is bad, it will slip in high gears (4th & 5th) but seem to work fine in lower gears. Clutch probably needs replaced but have a mechanic check it out first because it's a fairly expensive job. If your clutch is actuated via a cable (not hydraulic), it may just need adjusting.

When accelerating through the gears as i drive. I get a vibration when i hit second gear. Then when i hit 3rd gear, it feels like it slips and revs around 3,4k rpm, accelerating really slow. When i hit 4th...

sounds like 3rd gear/clutch is worn.I don't think a service will do any good.But if you remove the pan and find debris you know you will need a trans in the near future.

3rd gear is slipping

I assume that by "3rd gear is slipping" you're talking about the clutch is slipping in third gear. Let's try adjusting the clutch and see if that helps.

Find and follow the clutch cable until you get to the cable adjuster that is usually covered by a rubber bellows type boot. Move the boot out of the way and loosen the locknut. Turn the adjuster inwards until you get as much slack in the cable as possible.

Now, take the derby cover off the primary cover. Inside you'll see the clutch assembly with an adjuster bolt in the center. Loosen the locknut and turn the adjuster bolt inwards until you feel resistance. DO NOT FORCE THE BOLT, turn until you feel a resistance. Then back off on the adjuster 1/2 turn and lock the locknut down.

Then back at the cable adjuster, adjust the adjuster bolt outwards until you have about an 1/8" freeplay in the cable. Lock the locknut. Work the clutch several times and recheck the freeplay. Reinstall the rubber boot on the cable adjuster and the derby cover. This should correct your slipping problem.

Two problems okay..

For the key issue, try shooting some wd-40 into the tumbler, and working the key a bit. If that doesn't correct the issue, eventually you will need to replace the tumbler.

The hard shift is most likely not related to the clutch. As long as the vehicle has good acceleration, and you don't feel slipping, the clutch is fine. The issue may be related to a damaged cable, or to the linkage at the transmission itself.

Probably both.You definitely should open up the clutch side engine cover and take out the clutch plates and measure them to be sure.You must drain the oils before you do so.After inspection use new oil.

3rd gear clutch slip

is this pensol15/40 a motorcycle oil ,do not use auto motor oil in your bic it contains a friction modifier which will coat the clutch plates and cause them to slip and then glaze. the clutch plates will have to be removed and cleaned with brake cleaner and lighty sanded to remove the glaze. jim

Clutch is slipping on my 1995 BMW 318ti

to be fully honest if its doing this its wont be nothing to do the the fluid, the clutch plate will be sticking on the shaft untill you get it upto a higher speed,, that means you will need a complete clutch fitted, because as its slipping it is burning the clutch plate away,, you have new clutch fitted and car will be great. . playing away with things only makes matters worse and time comsuming ..
