That's strange. It's unusual that a new starter would do this. The problem sounds like it's the "over running clutch" is bad in the starter. This is the clutch that locks up allowing the starter to turn the engine but freewheels when the engine starts to prevent damage to the starter motor. It's very unusual to get a new starter with the same problem you were having with the old starter.

One slight chance is the coupling between the starter and the jackshaft. Did you inspect the coupling when you had it out? I've never seen one bad but there's always a first time for everything.

The starter gear on the jackshaft must be engaged since the starter will not turn until the gear has moved far enough to engage. The construction of the solenoid insures this.

I'd take the bike to where ever you bought the starter and let them listen to it. Since the starter is considered an electrical component, there may be a bit tension involved with this. But, any shop worth is salt will have no problem with swapping out the starter. I wouldn't since most people don't fool around inside the starter and there's no way of damaging it with incorrect installation.

Good Luck

Why does my 1999 Ford Expedition eating starters after replacing valve cover, removed cruise control box but it is back exactly the same?

Its your starter shims. Put shims in , what is happening is your starter gear is remaining engaged even after it starts thus it tears up the starter and the gear. It may take 2-3 shims. When you replaced your first starter did it have shims? I am willing to bet it did. Give it a try and i bet this fixes your problem. Good luck

How to change a starter drive on a 1995 herritage softail

Hi Anonymous, here is the short version: Disconnect battery ground cable, drain primary and remove primary cover, remove starter jack shaft bolt while holding the pinion gear, remove rear exhaust pipe, remove all wires, cables, and bracket from starter, remove the 2 starter bolts, now for the fun part, if the Harley Gods are wearing white suits you may be able to wiggle out starter while sticking out your tounge at a 37 degree angle, if they are wearing black well you might have to either loosen or remove some oil tank mounts to facilitate extraction. Good luck

2004 SPORSTER ROADSTER -XL-1200 STARTER PROBLEMS??

Hi Anonymous, it sounds the like starter drive/clutch has gone south, it has components inside, that when spinning, centrifugal forces cause them to grab or lock into permanently fixed counterparts. The gear only spins one way and locks the other way. If you have one that spins both ways it has failed and needs to be replaced. Please visit the web site below for more help and good luck.

there is a gear on the starter you need to remove starter to see if its worn out also it sounds like its not ingaging.when you have stater off check for wear on both gears if there is no teeth worn on drive gear.replace starter cause of problem is the bendix in the starter.

My 87 jeep starter stays ingaged when I try to start it

needs shimmed or the bendix is bad in the starter and not allowing to release. most likely just needs shimmed if it's a new starter, however you can get a bad starter (new or rebuilt)

2007 herritage softail wont start with new battery and new alarm battery....no pwr to starter....this happened all of a sudden

Check you're starter relay. Replace if you think it may be bad. You can check to see if you have voltage going to the relay when you press the start button. I don't have a schematic but you can tell if you check and only have voltage when the start button is pushed. If the voltage is always there, this is not the start button.

75 sportster starter just spins. 1st time it did it I tapped starter with rubber mallet and started. No problems for weekbut now doing same thing, and tapping doesn't help starter just spins...

If the starter spins but the engine does not turn, it's not your starter. It is your starter drive or Bendix on the starter shaft. Disconnect the battery. Take the outer primary cover off. Take the wires off the starter solenoid, remove the pin, cup and spring on the inside of the primary, and remove the solenoid. With this off, you can remove the starter shaft. Clamp the starter shaft in a vise with soft jaws on it. You don't want to scar your starter shaft. You'll see a round thing on the end of the shaft with two flats on it. Use a wrench to take this off. IT HAS LEFT HANDED THREADS. Slide the old Bendix off and put the new one on. Put a drop of Loctite 271 red on the threads and put the nut back on the end and tighten. Put your bake back together in reverse of how you took it apart. When you buy the replacement Bendix, but a good one. Do not buy the Chinese version, they're junk.

Starter ingages for a couple of cranks then disingage

Hi, if the starter free-spins after disengaging this indicates a weak solenoid. Recommend you replace the solenoid. If the starter stops entirely, you may have a weak battery.

Starter is ingaging but not but ingaging flywheel on a 1992 harley davidson

The way the solenoid it designed, the starter gear MUST engage the ring gear in order for the starter to start turning. The plunger inside the solenoid has to go all the way forward in order to make electrical contact to start the motor.

Now, that doesn't mean that the starter gear WILL turn the engine. It sounds like you've got a bad "over running" clutch. When these units go bad, you can hear the starter motor running but the engine is not turning over.

Now, here's the rub on that. If you have the abilitiy to remove the starter, disassemble it, and replace it, you can save yourself some money. If not, you're better off simply replacing the starter.

The part cost about $100 but the time it takes to put it in will quickly eat up any savings you might have by repairing the starter rather than replacing it. Labor rates are high these days.

Good Luck
