How to Build: Antenna Tuners

Get you a metal box about 4 inches X 4 inches. Use 2 female Cb antenna inputs from old Cb radios or Radio Shack. Get a old Am radio tuner out of a AM radio(530-1700 khz.) Buy or scrap up some copper wire; big gauge I used. Wound 8-10 turns about " 1 inch round close tight wound. Solder to AM tuner- C1 it shall say on top of Am tuner. Solder Center of Am tuner to Ground(Metal box). For those who know electronics the Tuner is 0-365pf Am band 530-1700khz types. OK, back to assembly. drill a hole for the Two Female Cb Inputs on both sides of metal box. Attach copper wire inside to center taps of Inputs on both sides. Drill a hole for Am tuner and Screw on its lock nut and place a knob on it. Solder all grounds of Female Antenna inputs and Tuner Ground and all Grounds to metal box. Use a washer and Bolt to lock down Grounds to Box. This is how it operates after you use a Jumper to hook to TX of Cb radio. Antenna to other side. Its just a simple L/C network. The Tx travels through copper wire(coil) inside box and gets shunted to ground by the right level of PF Capacitance. The operator tunes it in to get a close to 1.1 to 1.5 SWR ratio. Its simple, but helps with bad Antennas.

Red antenna warning indicator light stays on

The red light is a warning of antenna mismatch; when you hold the antenna, you are changing the match between the CB's output amplifier and the antenna. Try it with a different antenna or pick up a 'test light' (or test load) for CBs from an electronics dealer, I've also seen them with CB accessories at truck stops. If the test light fires off and the red light on the CB is dark, the antenna you have is junk.

I have cb hooked up to antena and power i think its hooked up right but when i key mic both lights on right hand side of cb turn red . plus when i try to tune swr with the manual the swr needle will not...

Sounds like a problem with your coax cable. You may not have the ends on the cable properly or the cable may have a kink or short in it somewhere. That is a sign of a very high SWR and usually means a short somewhere. If it is a mobile antenna make sure the little plastic washer on the antenna mount is installed properly. It is meant to insulate the antenna center conductor from the metal it is mounted to. It goes on top of the bracket and has a little raised collar on one side which should sit in the hole on the bracket.

I have a cb radio in the car and one at home if i got out in car i get about a mile and then no one at home can hear me but they can hear others can you help

radios are very picky beasts, the first thing you should do to get more range out of them is have them tuned by a cb dealer, from factory they rarely get out very far. also for the one that goes in your car antenna placement is very critical since your car body affects how the signal travels. even the length of antenna cable has a effect. when you have them "tuned" many times they will clip a resistor or "limiter" inside the unit. if you look up cb modding, youll find pages with 100s of makes of cb's and learn what modding them means. also look into high gain antenna for your units, if you want really long range buy a linear antenna "illegal in a lot of places" but you will be heard! people have used high gain antenna, and "skip" to talk to people in other states and countrys. skip is when the radio signal "skips" across the uppter atmosphere and uses it like a really big antenna. a lot of truck stops will have a good selection of antennas because cb is still very popular amongst truck drivers. i hope this helps you out and leads you in the right direction. cb is almost a lost art now and its nice to see people that are interested in it. take care and good luck!!

OUCH! Cb antennas are cut to a specific frequency. FM antennas are also cut to a specific frequency. If you ground the antenna to a frame, you short out the antenna. BAD THING. If it is a 102" whip, you would have to cut off about 2/3's of the whip to work. If there is a cylinder at the base of the antenna You would only need about 7' of the whip sticking out for it to work right. Inside the cylinder there is a coil that would make up for the missing length of a 102" whip. I would suggest finding an old CB with FM built in like one of the old SEARS CB/FM receivers.
They had the electronics built in to compensate for the varience in the old sets.

Cb feedback though external am/fm speakers

Hi Big OX,

Terrible problem.  I know what your going though.  Route your AM/FM Antenna wire, and Speaker wires separate from the  CD Antenna cable and power supply wires. If you can,  twist the speaker wires.  If the Speaker wires are run along side the CB Antenna wire for a short distance, you will pickup feedback. If you much have the Antenna wire get near the speaker wires, have the antenna wire cross the speaker wire at a 90 degree angle. Try not to run the antenna wire in paralell with the speaker wires.   Good luck
