The 1995 and earlier VT600 Shadows were 4 speed transmissions. Are you sure it is a 1997? Check the frame neck of your cycle there is a plate that tells you what year the cycle is. There is also a possibility that some body changed the motors and put in an older motor with a 4 speed instead of a 5 speed. If you look on the engine case/cover where the spline shaft for the shifter comes out, the shift pattern is often stamped on the case. Some one could have put a 5 speed cover on a 4 speed engine, but it is unlikely. The only thing worse than being slipped a 4 speed instead of a 5 speed , would be having to pay big bucks to fix the 5 speed (you would have to split the cases).

1984 vt500c Honda Shadow. Hard shifting. When putting into 1st from neutral, it almost seems to grind sometimes. The only fluids I've checked is the engine oil and it's fine. Is there a specific...

How many miles are on it? You can try adjusting the clutch cable, there is a thumbwheel and adjuster bolt on the clutch lever perch where the cable goes into it. Simply loosen the thumbwheel, then turn the bolt outwards untill the excess cable slack is taken up. ONLY TAKE UP THE SLACK!! If this does not aleviate the problem, you likely have transmission problems- the slots and dogs in the transmission gears become worn with use/abuse- the most common ****** problem is clattering when putting into first gear, and difficult/missed 1-2 upshift. If your bike sometimes doesn't want to go into 2nd gear (requires double shifting, or seems to want to go into neutral before going into second) it's a sure sign of transmission wear. This can sometimes be repaired by replacing/ re-cutting and grinding the 1-2 gearsets, but in most cases it requires major disassembly of bottom end of the engine. This is a several hundred dollar repair, easy, and not one that many shops will be willing to take on with an older bike.

My son just bought a second hand honda 600RR 2006, It seems to stall when engaged in gear, which automatically goes to 2. And I cant get 1st gear?

Is the sidestand down, some bikes have a safety interlock that kills the engine when the bike is put into gear with the sidestand down.

How many rpms should i go on my honda cbr 600

hi,i dont know a lot about this particular bike, but,as with any high revving sports bike you will need to keep the revs up before changing gear,an 883 sportster has a lot more torque than your bike and you can "short shift "them and let the torque do the work, however on a cbr i think you will need more rpm before you shift as they dont have the torque of your old harley,a friend of mine has an r6 yamaha, that thing revs out to nearly 17000 rpm he doesnt change untill about 9 or 10000 rpm, from memory your bike should be capable of nearly 60mph in first gear..hope this helps...cheers

Problem with transmission? 1993 Honda Shadow VT600

A couple of things can come into play here. First, there is no such thing as a "short gear". That was B.S. just to sell the bike. The bike could have a bent shift fork that doesn't quite move the slider all the way over for a full gear engagement. The problem could also be a couple of broken teeth on the meshing of second gear. The most likely is a bent shift fork. It really doesn't matter much which problem it is because the repair procedure is the same. Did I mention that it is going to cost around $1500.00 to fix it?

The entire engine comes out of the frame and gets completely torn down. The top end comes off, the case covers come off, the clutch, shift shaft, kick starter, flywheel and electrics all come off. Then the case is split to gain access to the gears and shift drum. The gears and shift drum now get removed and now the bent fork can be replaced or any gears needing replacement. Replace the broken gear and also any gear the broken gear meshes with.

I should also mention another problem. Most dealers will not work on bikes over 10 years old and most not longer have the parts in inventory. Talk with a dealer's mechanics and ask if they do repairs outside of the shop or who they reccommend to do the repair. Sorry for having to give you the bad news. Who ever sold the bike to you, a novice rider getting his first bike, should be addressed for a refund, (which he is not likely to do), or at least 1/2 the repair cost, (which he is also unlikely to do).
Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
