Adjusting tappet clearance

If you have adjustable tappets bring the engine to top dead center no 1 piston firing The rocker will be on the back of the cam lobes. Inlet .010" hot exhaust .012" hot and then turn until next firing piston is in position. Go by firing order. I suspect that a 1997 model would have hydraulic adjusted tappets which means no manual adjustment. If it is rattlly I would be checking for worn rocker shaft and rocker bushes.

1989 yamaha fj 1200 minor backfiring while backing down through the gears

back firing down through the gears means the engine is allowing unburnt fuel into the exhaust box --muffler--. Reasons can be exhaust valve clearance incorrect--- to rich or lean--ignition timing needs setting correctly. Rattly at cold and I take it that yours is still air cooled would be normal as the piston clearance is greatest until the piston heats up and expands to operating tolerance.. Check and adjust the tappet (valve)clearance and check for worn areas under the rocker face as the valve wear a small hole here making adjustment difficult.

Mitsubishi 4D33 tappet clearance

Most engines having tappets that can be adjusted run .010" inlet and .012" exhaust hot. Best check to be sure but if you want to get the engine running add .002" to the measurements cold and readjust when you have the correct measurements. If you have hydraulic tappets just start the engine and oil pressure will adjust automatically

Can you set valve clearances on a 1997 clio 1.2 engine.my engine sounds as if the tappets are noisey.

The tappet clearence should be in the owners handbook but it's a bit early a tappet noise from the engine (2006) ! Check oil level and change if it's overdue a service is definately worth a look ! Good luck

Yes I need to know how to properly adjust the valves on my 87'Yamaha, 350 fourwheeler.

Hi
Same as any four stroke engine. Usually cold. remove the fuel tank and Rocker covers, small inspection bolt near top of gear case.
Simply rotate engine to TDC (With spark plug out) (Top dead centre) as indicated by aligning timing marks through inspection bolt hole.
Using feeler gauge with correct thickness selected (As per manufacturers handbook) (I do not have them)
Now insert the feeler gauge between the rocker arm and tip of the valve. If you do not know how to identify an exhaust valve to an inlet one the exhaust ones are by the exhaust pipe, inlet ones are by the intake manifold. If tappet settings are the same for both then no problem, if different (Inlets always less than the exhaust)
When adjusting loosen lock nut and gently alter gap until you can just pull feeler gauge out, recheck after tightening. Be patient as some can take along time to adjust correctly unless you have done a few.

My yamaha 350 warrior, and it wont start, Do i need to adjust the valve? How do i do that?

adjustment of valve reasonably simple, remove tappet covers, remove small bung from mag cover top and rotate engine until you are able to see a capital T on the flywheel, providing whist you rotated engine it was on the correct stroke the inlet valve should have just closed when you saw the T. this is the correct stroke. loosen tappets lock nuts, adjust the tappets so you can just move it with your fingers, if your want to get technical the clearances between tappet and valve should be about .05mm

hello
with the cylinder set at top dead center compression. using a feeler gauge between the tappets and the valves there should be .002-.003in clearance on the intake valves, and .006-.007in. clearance on the exhaust valves. thank you.
