Hi, if the air filter is oil soaked or DIRTY. these are troublesome, if the oil dries-up (not pulling enough FUEL into the carburetter, too much AIR). if too much oil higher FUEL COSUMPTION or WILL NOT START (WETTING THE SPARK PLUG (S)). gerry

Changed oil clogged air filter with new after market air filter bike ran good until the third time I started it it would not idle unless it was choked

My Harley is very slow to warm up, it also does not like to idle without choke unless it is good and warm. It could be the clogged filter was acting like a choke, but ruining your gas mileage. Now with air flowing smoothly the engine needs a bit of choke to idle. It should not need choke once it is fully warmed up unless your idle speed is set too low. With the engine hot, check RPM if you have a tach. If too low, adjust the idle speed at the carburetor. I suggest you find the adjustment while the engine is cold.

If it's cold, you need the choke to richen the fuel mixture until the engine warms up. Use your hand to partially cover the air intake. Once it starts, use your hand to feather the amount of air you allow to the engine until it smoothes out.

Clean 1992 kawasaki zx11 carb

Sounds like the bike is struggling with being too lean.
The choke richens the mixture by increasing the fuel to air ratio
Often these old carbs get worn out and allow air in without going via the air box.
However I would look over the bike and ensure all cables and things are working properly. Ensure all gaskets, gromets and surfaces are seated properly.
Lastly cleaning the carb jets will ensure there are no blockages restricting fuel flow

If the carb is adjusted correctly, the engine will not idle without the choke when cold. I will usually take at least 3 to 5 miles of riding to get the engine warm enough to idle by itself without the choke. If your bike is a full operating temperature, it should idle at about 1000 RPM. If it's idling higher than this, you need to slow it down a bit.

Remove the air filter cover and look at the top right side of the carb. You'll see a screw there . This is the throttle stop screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise to lower the idle speed to 1000 RPM or so. Blip the throttle and let it settle back to idle. Reset it if necessary. Once set, put the air cleaner cover hand on.

First is your choke open or closed when you startthe bike.Try adjusting your carb a/f mix as you are running rich (high fuel mix ratio). Good enough?

Hard to start lawn tractor

I have 2009 lawn tractor that will not start (from day 1) unless I use a small squirt
of start fluid into the air cleaner area. Nothing else seems to work. The battery will run down before it starts. Once engine is warm it starts great. Love the tractor,
hate the starting problem. Elevation is not a problem in michigan.

Poor starting from cold

If the bike has been sitting for a long time (a year or more) you could have plugged up carburetors. Also, make sure the choke cable is adjusted so that it moves the choke fully when the handlebar mounted choke lever is operated. You may not be getting a full-rich condition when cold starting. Make sure the clamps that hold the carburetors to the intake boots are tight. Air leaks will cause both poor starting and poor performance (and possible engine dameage). Also, don't open the throttle excessively when cold starting.
Aside from all that, make sure all of the normal tune up items have been done recently (valve adjustment, new spark plugs, air filter, etc.).

This bike is a 2007 and is extremely cold blooded

check for air leak where carb meets intake manifold.air cleaner element must be in good condition and prpoerly seated.

Stalling when starting

I would check that the rubber seals for the Choke circuit are in good shape and that the choke is actually working properly.
