Three things can cause this. Low tire pressure. A cupped or damaged tire. But most likely loose steering head bearings. If the bearings in the frame neck are not tight enough it can cause shimmys/wobbles/and vibration. Many mechanics fail to adjust the bearings at the 600 mile check up to save time. Some disassembly required. Many times the tool kit has a curved tool with a single tooth for adjusting shocks. If you have one available you can use this to turn the bearing nut on the top of steering neck.

Car shimmies at 45 mph

have a front suspension check done and replace any worn ball joints and other failed parts . Check tyres for bulges in the side walls and belt separation . Have a wheel alignment done as this problem is a Castor wobble from negative castor settings. If a 4WD vehicle with a shocky on the tie rod bar have it replaced as it is not opertaional

All you need is a wheel balance. Either that or you have some mud or ice stuck in a rim, or it could be a bent rim.

Our 2008 Jeep Commander with 32K miles has developed a shimmy, we first noticed it about 53 MPH but now it will do it at 40, 50 or around 60 with no consistancy, We have taken it to the dealer and they say...

First, I'm on your side. A shimmy is never normal. It is probable that you have a tire problem. Tire problems tend to get worse with time and mileage. With the low mileage on your vehicle it is unlikely that there is a suspension problem that is causing your shimmy however, anything is possible.

Tire was either not balanced properly, or wheel is bent.
