Sounds like you've got a broken cam chain or cam drive gear. When the twin cam first cam out in 2000 for the softail, that was a major problem. I'm sure there was a recall on that and if your bike was never done, the recall is still good. Call the factory with your frame number handy and ask if the cam gear recall has been done on your bike. I had a guy get his ignition switch on a '94 model because his was under the recall and had not been done. You just may luck out.

Good Luck

Place a spark plug tester in your number #1 ignition lead and confirm spark.- No spark = possible ignition module failure if spark from coil is present.

Test the fuel line pressure for 12 PSI.for throttle body fuel injection systems on 1987 to 1995 - If reading is low replace fuel pump. If reading is zero lbs check relay.

Compression test for acceptable compression.

If you have spark, fuel and compression, static time the engine and try again to start the vehicle.

PS: If your vehicle is a standard shift you have a clutch safety switch and a column mounted ignition switch that should also be considered.

Why won't my 1998 Polaris indy 500 start? It is getting fuel and has spark.

Along with fuel and spark...you need enough spark and you need enough compression. Asssuming your rings aren't broken and you can feel good compression when you are turning it over, you can spray a little ether in the carburetor chamber. If there is enough spark and compression it will at least fire up momentarily.
Sometimes the rings or cylinders get scratched up because they run incorrect gas/oil ratios for too long and then when they sit for a while the oxidation fills in those scratched surfaces. Starting with high fuel to oil ratios is easier to start ( gas burns easier with less oil in it) but the engine will wear faster with high ratios.

But if the engine won't start under pure ether, then the spark is real weak or out of time, and/or the compression is shot. Good compression makes heat and concentrates the air and fuel together. If the compression even falls from 10:1 to 8:1, that is enough to cool the charge from about 150F down to about 90F or so and you won't get ignition

Suzuki gsxr 750 slingshot cranks but wont start.

For a motorcycle engine to run you need compression, ignition (spark) and fuel. Quite often with a bike like a Suzuki if the plugs get even a little wet but otherwise look like great plugs, the motorcycle will not start. So, new plugs are a good place to start, however if you put in new plugs and try to start a few times and have fuel but no spark the new plugs may become unable to start also.

FIRST check to see it you have spark at the spark plugs, then remove the plugs and either do a compression test with a gauge OR put a finger over the plug hole and turn it over and if you have adequate compression the engine will blow your finger off of the hole when it comes up on the compression stroke.

If you have a carburetted bike you can check for fuel by taking off the air filter and operating the throttle a few times full open in which case the accelerator pump should eject a spray of fuel into the carburetor throat. With Carb or Fuel Injection you could also spray some fuel into the carb throat or the induction module throat while turning the engine over with spark at the plugs. If you have spark and compression but no fuel th eengine will fire when you spray the fuel into it.

Yamaha virago y rone with choke honney the cilanderfronthis cold hand back his hot afer 4 minute ron

Your front cylinder is not running. This could be due to spark or fuel, or lack of compression.
Check for spark first by inserting a good plug in the plug wire and holding it against the cylinder. If it shows bright spark, you may have a fueling or compression issue.
Check for compression, should be around 150psi. If you have spark and compression, you probably have a fueling issue.
Check the carb for the front cylinder for fuel level in the bowl. If the fuel level is correct you have another carb issue which will require removal and cleaning/servicing.

Why wont my chainsaw start

First, pull a compression check, if you get under 115 lbs there is your problem. If the compression is good, use a 3-point spark tester to check the amount of spark. If good, you have fuel delivery issues. Check fuel lines, fuel filter and lastly the carburetor itself.

My 2004 chevy malibu classic 4 cyl wont start its

There are four things required for an engine to run: air, fuel, compression and properly timed spark. If you have fuel and timed spark, the only two variables are air and compression. Air is not the likely problem, and compression should be good unless you blew a head gasket or the rings in all four cylinders. How did you determine that you have fuel and spark? Those are the two most likely problem areas.

Won't start ; i have spark, fuel

It takes 3 things for an internal combustion engine to run... compression, spark, and fuel.
First perform a compression test. If its under 90psi the compression is too low and it would cost more to repair than to replace.
Sidenote: A unit that is extremely flooded will give a false low compression reading. Remove the spark plug, turn unit upside down so that spark plug hole is facing down and slowly pull the starter rope. If fuel drips out then the crankcase is flooded with fuel.
Next, be sure that your fuel is fresh and free of water. If the fuel is more than 20 days old it is stale.
Also, holding the spark plug against the head is not an accurate test for spark. A failed spark plug or weak module will fire when not under a load but will not fire when in the cylinder environment under compression. A spark tester is the best way to know for sure that you have a good strong spark.
Lastly, something you can do which requires no special tools is check the condition of the cylinder/ piston. Remove the spark plug then remove the muffler and look into the cylinder. You can pull the starter rope slowly to move the piston up and down. Observe the wall of the cylinder and the side of the piston. They should be smooth and shiny. A dull grey appearence indicates debris ingestion, grooves ( also called scoring) indicate metal to metal contact caused by a break down of the oil due to heat or lack of oil. The presence of scoring means that the unit is not cost effective to repair and should be replaced. Dull grey usually means low compression too.

Car wont start or fire even with starting fluid

To review - - if you have spark, fuel, and compression, you should have combustion.
In this case, if the timing belt is damaged, you might not have compression or spark at the right time.
A faulty crank or cam sensor could cause you not to have spark at the right time.
The spark plugs could be worn out or fuel fouled and not able to fire under compression.
Did the car die or just not start ?

Fired then stopped.will not start again even with a boost.

Cars need three things to run:
Spark
Compression
Fuel

All of these have to happen at the right time. If the engine is rotating normally during cranking, spray some starter fluid into the intake to see if the engine will run on the fluid. If not, then do a spark test. Spark testers are cheap and can be found at part stores. If the car has spark, then do a compression test. If compression is low on all cylinders then you probably need a timing belt. If compression is normal and you have spark, then you have a fuel issue and probably need a fuel pump. If you have no spark, check all of the fuses under the hood and inside the car.

Engine turns over but wont start? it has spark! and fuel!

Pull out # 1 spark plug and put back into plug wire, rest on motor block so that end of electrode is against metal. turn motor over and have a finger or compression gauge in # 1 cylinder, check to see if spark occur at same time as compression (compression will blow air past finger or raise gauge). When you say it has fuel do you mean gas tank has fuel? Are you sure fuel is getting to the cylinders? are plugs wet with fuel? Does it turn over but kinda thumps or backfire (Caugh)? Check the spark and compression first. if they don't happen at same time, the timing skipped or belt broke. if all is good pull plugs and inspect, could be flooded (WET) from fuel. either replace or spray with starting fluid and compressed air to dry them. spray starting fluid into air intake if starts then stalls, try again, if same thing happens then you have a fuel problem. try these suggestions first 1/2 hr time table, hopefully sucess, if not it sure indicates fuel.
