hi all, looking for info about the insides of rec/reg box, circuit diagram / schematic. I am in the UK working on mates 97 soft tail, keeps burning out reg/rec boxes 4 in 10 thousand miles!.Is there regulator circuitry fitted inside this finned box?. I find the rectifier on the front of the bike on the frame, this black box contains diodes to change electric from AC to DC. Does this box also have the components to regulate the DC electric to 14.8 volts? I intend building a separate rectifier, with a little 12 volt DC PC processor fan included, then a separate board with the 32 amp 14.8 voltage regulator circuit nearer to the battery. Do you think this is a do'able project? I have a fair bit of electronics experience, and hold UK ham radio qualifications.

Well, let's determine why it's not charging or simply take it to the dealer and let them figure it out.

First, take the battery out of the bike and have it tested. The Softail bikes are extremely rough on batteries because of the battery's location. It's enclosed inside that hot oil tank. Between the heat and the vibration, batteries take a licking in a Softail. Take it to an automotive parts store and ask them to load test it for you. If it's good, we'll test the charging system.

To test the system, you'll need a DVOM (digital volt ohm meter). To test the system, you'll need a FULLY CHARGED BATTERY in the bike. Connect the red meter lead to the positive terminal and the black meter lead to the negative terminal. Set the meter's function selector to DC VOLTS, 20 VOLTS or greater scale. Start the engne and bring it to a high idle. The meter should read 14.5-15.0 volts.

To test the alternator's output, unplug the plug at the front of the engine cases. Down in the engine side of the plug, you'll see two metal contacts. These contacts are where we're going to make our next test. Since the output is AC voltage, it makes no difference which meter lead goes to which contact. Set you meter's function switch to AC VOLTS, 50 VOLTS or greater. Start the engine and insert one meter lead into each metal contact. Your meter should read at least 30 volts.

Now, if your alternator test failed, you'll need a new stator in your engine. If the alternator test passed but the battery test failed, your regulator is probably the culprit.

Good Luck
steve

Hi i have a 2000 fxst harley i put new starter in my bike, than i couldnt get it started so i put new coil and plug wire it run good for 6 or 7 mile, now front plug has kno spar.

Why did you change the starter? Because it had a dead battery? If your battery is not getting charged (is the headlight bright when the engine is running?) you will get kno spar pretty quickly.

Hi Anonymous, and the usual suspects are:
1.Ignition/Light Key Switch not in IGNITION position.
2.Engine Stop switch in the OFF position.
3.Discharged battery, loose or corroded connections (solenoid chatters).
4. Bank Angle Sensor tripped and Ignition/Light Key Switch not cycled to Off and then back to Ignition

I just bought a new battery for my 2005 Softail Deluxe; I road yesterday (10/20 miles) as I was finishinng the run, the bike shut off; could this mean the battery was not fully charged? Will a trickle...

Good idea put it on a trickle charge, however, the battery had enough charge init to start the bike initially, and the bike should have charged the battery after 10-20 miles, worth checking the charge rate to the battery from the rectifier,

Battery went flat even after riding for hours. showing 12.7 volts. When ran engine with revs it measured 12 .22. Think it must be rectifier. What should be output with engine running on 2001 softail duce

Proper battery charging will show ~13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery terminals. Check for continuity through the alternator windings, check each diode in the rectifier stack and look for a voltage regulator which may be defective.

Harley softail 2000, has been sittin for 3 months, cranks but wont start

The battery has to be fully charged. It will crank but will not start without a fully charged battery.

If it still does not start, check for gas.

Really the battery is most likely at fault here if it was alright 3 months ago.
