Question about Harley Davidson FXD - FXDI Dyna Super Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

The engine turns over, but won't start. Battery is fine. I tested spark plugs and they are sparking. It seems like the carburator is not getting gas. I took apart the fuel valve to make sure it wasn't clogged. I checked the vacuum diaphram and it is ok. When I attempt to start the bike with the fuel line from the valve detached, no gas flows from the valve. I'm stumped.

You havve found the fault right but the remedy is to work on the carburator to get the fuels lines to flow with ease.
So remove carburator, wash with petrol well. from the float chamber to the valve the flow must not be restricted. so use a good air pressure to blow out all the jets and inter chamber connections till your are satisfied.
The air screw settings , the idle settings sections must also be cleaned and set.
Now with the suction the fuel must be drawn into the throttle.
SInce there is good intensity spark on the plug the fuel restriction can be the main fault.
Set back with the same settings for the carburator and fine tune.If possible remove plug ,heat with a flame and clean.set correct gap and check for good spark. Flush out all excess fuel in cylinder and set hot plug in to crank.

I have replaced the battery and ignition unit on my 1985 suzuki 700 es, the bike really sounds like it wants to run but wont start. Starter turns but engine won't kick over. Any Ideas?

Is it getting gas properly? Has it been sitting around for a while? The carburators on motorcycles need to cleaned after sitting around. The jet could be full of varnish. Are you getting spark for sure? Pull out a spark plug and put it in the wire, crank it over and see if the spark plug sparks. When you pulled the plug was it wet at all with gas? Then it probably isn't getting gas right. Just some of the things you could try.

I have a 2000 kia sportage that cranks but will not start what might it be?

When en engine won't start, there could be a number of things wrong. An engine requires air, fuel, and spark to start. You need to start by checking for spark. Take out one of the spark plugs and plug it back into the wire. Have somebody else turn the key while you hold the plug up to something metal on the engine, right next to the spark plug hole will be fine. You should see a bright blue spark, if you don't then you probably need to replace the spark plugs. You can do this same thing with any of the spark plugs. If you don't have spark on any of the plugs, get back with me and we'll go from there.

Does the starter turn the engine when you try to start it or does it seem like the battery is flat again ? If the engine is turning over with the starter you should check to see if it has spark to the spark plugs . You can check this by taking the coil wire off the distributer end , inserting a spark plug into it and hold the side of the plug against any ground or metal part of the engine and get someone to crank the engine. You should see a bluish white spark at the end of the plug. If you have spark reinsert the plug wire . Now do a fuel pressure test. You need a test gauge for this. There is a test point { usually looks like a tire stem like on a bycicle with a cap on it} on the fuel rail. The test gauge will screw onto it and when you turn on the key you should get a reading os 35 to 45 lbs. Those are the first things to check if its not the battery or charging system.

The engine cranks fine, but it will not turn over

Pull the spark plug and test it for spark or replace the plug and see if it will start. You need three things to occur for any engine to run; Spark,Fuel and air. It seems the air factor is ok, not sure of the fuel factor based on the info provided and spark needs to be verified.

No start on old gasoline forklift engine.

most likely the ign switch is ok if you are getting spark. so you have a hot spark at coil and weak fire at plugs? if you have a test light check the positive side of coil for power when turning key on and cranking. if it is dropping power on positive side then ign switch could be bad. can "hotwire" coil by jumping a wire to positive side of coil to pos of battery this will eliminate ign switch.

My 2003 FLSTF won't start. It's getting gas, don't think it's getting spark. Battery is in good shape. Coil?

Do not remove the spark plugs to test for spark on your bike. With the introduction of the twin cam engine, they now have a compression sensor on the engine. With the spark plugs removed, you won't get a spark. Put the plugs back in the engine and use another set of plugs to test for spark.

If it still won't start, come back and tell us whether the engine is carburated or fuel injected.
