An XS400 does not use gear oil . All the lubrication is done with the engine oil. Use JASO MA certfied motorcycle oil to protect your gears and wet clutch.

Gear stick getting tight while driving short distances. Gears first to fourth has to be forced in, because the gear stick feels tight. Only happens on short run while using gears more often.

I assume this is a standard transmission. You didn't mention how old the car is, but if it has had the transmission fluid replaced, they may have put in too heavy a fluid, which is not allowing the synchronizers to function properly until the fluid is warmed. Check that the gearbox is properly serviced and that it has the correct viscosity fluid.
When I had my manual gearbox fluid replaced three years ago, they put in the standard 75W90 gear oil, but the manufacturer specifications call for a much lighter fluid. My shifting was very tight, especially in cold weather, so I drained it and added the recommended lubricant. MUCH better!

My 97 ford exlorer will not go into gear except when I put it in 4 wheel low. transmission has been making a popping noise for a while.

If it won't go into gear, sounds like you've run out of transmission fluid. That grinding sound when you turn the shaft by hand, sounds like you've run it for a bit too long without fluid and wore the gears down. Start it up and check the trans fluid with dipstick. If none on stick, put some in it. You may have already ruined the transmission though. But you never know. Try putting fluid in. Might work.(for a while)

My 1999 xr6 manual gear box is jaming.very hard to put in gear

First thing to check is the fluid level and type. Overly thick fluid makes for hard shift lever.

Very difficult at times to get into gear on my 2007 grand vitara. At times when in gear cannot change gear at all but other times moves through gears freely. What is the problem?

if this is an automatic transmission, check your transmission fluid level. The fluid should be red, if it is orange/ brown colour and smells burnt. Will need to be changed. Take it somewhere to have fluid and filter changed. If you are mechanically inclined try flushing the fluid through the transmission. Disconnedt the driver side transmission cooling rubber line from bottom of rad. place the end of the hose in a large container. Put parking brake on, turn on vehicle and put into drive. the transmision fluid with pump out into container. Watch how fast it pumps out. When the fluids stops coming out, shut off engine and put back into park. Next drain remaining fluid out of transmission pan. There is 9/19 or 14mm bolt for this on bottom side of transmission. When this is done, refill transmission and repeat. This time you are flushing all the extra **** out of the transmission. Again check thre flow rate of the fluid coming out. It will come out faster this time. When finished replace transmission fluid again with new clean fluid. This should help free your shifting. When starting the engine for the first time. Put the brake on and put the shifter in 1st for a few seconds , then 2nd and drive, then reverse. This will also allow the fluid to begin to circulate.
If the transmission fluid was dark brown or black it would be wise to replace filter when you finish flushing transmission. To do this you have to disconnect the 4 wheel drive shaft to get pan off. Try just flushing the transmission first. I will look again in couple of days for your reply.

check tranny fluid.if fluid level is correct.change fluid and filter if its been a long while.if it still wont go into gear.your tranny oil pump is worn.and the forward clutch seals and drive plates worn.

I dont know where to put the oil for the gear box

Brake fluid is the same fluid you put in the clutch master cylinder. Any mechanic will verify this.
