Sounds more like a lifter is not releasing it's pressure. to get the pressure off valve the motor has to be at top dead center compression for that cylinder.both rockers should have some give if at tdc. u can remove top rocker cover to check rockers. if spring is weak the valve won't open al the way or close correctly.

What causes a tapping noise when the engine is running in a 2002 Saturn L200?

Lifters, push rods and rockers arms. That's what does it. To check lifters. Start the engine and get it up to operating temperature. Put a half quart of transmission fluid in it and let it run. If the tapping goes away, let it run for about 30 minutes. Drain the oil and change the oil filter. Refill it and add some oil treatment first, lucus, slick 50.. what ever you prefer. If the noise doesn't go away. Look at the rocker arms and push rods, they should be polished, replace them as needed, I would still put the additive in.

Either a load tapping or a clicking sound wen the engine is running some said it was the main bearing so i need to replace the motor but i think it might be a bent push rod my car run fine but only with...

Bearing noise will usually stop after the oil pressure builds up, unless they are really bad. And then they usually screach. You may have a bad push rod, lifter or rocker arm. Try to locate which side it is comming from and remove the valve cover. The one in question will be sloppy. You can fix the rocker arm and rod from here. If it is a lifter you have to remove the intake manifold.

2001 Sunfire 2.2L, Car started Noise seems to coming from top of Eng . Lifters is my guess, is there anything that would make similar noise, or that I should be checking, How can I be sure it is lifters?

You make have a bad or sticking lifter, remove the valve cover and have someone tap the key, make sure to disconnect the ignition coil to avoid the engine from starting, as they tap the key you will look for the valve to close, a good way is to watch the one next to it open, when the valve is open then you will know the other is closed as there are two valves per cylinder. with the valve closed grab rocker arm and see if theres a lot of play in the direction it moves if it does then look at rocker and push rod and if those are good then you have a bad lifter. if this engine use an overhead cam then there will be no rocker arms or push rods you will need to look for any worn lobes on cam, a stethiscope would be a good tool. start engine with cover off and listen to each cylinder and pin point noise, this will get a little messy as oil will be splashing out a little but its the best way to locate the noise. poor oil flow would cause this also or a loose timing chain. i would start at the top first and look inside cover. good day.

Tapping noise coming from top end of engine sounds like a tapewrighter

You either have loose rocker arms or a broken pushrod.  They can both be accessed by taking off the valve cover on the top of the engine.  It looks like an upside down bread pan.  When you take them off it will look something like this:

http://www.corvettefever.com/howto/corp_0701_rocker_arms/photo_01.html

There is a bolt in the middle, check them all to see if they are equally tight.  Don't just start tightening them, but look to see if one is much looser then the rest.  The best would be to properly torque them down, which requires a torque wrench and the spec, but you can get close by judging how tight the  other ones are and trying to match it.

If none of them are loose then you need to look for a broken pushrod.  The push rod is on the other side of the spring and you should be able to get it out by removing the rocker arm and just pulling it out.  You may need a tool or magnet to get the broken piece out. You can start the engine while the valve cover is off, just keep your fingers out of the. way and hold a towel over the rocker arms to keep from getting sprayed with oil.  This might help you figure out which one is broken.

Sound gets louder win in motion it has 243,000 miles.culd it be a rocker arm? it has good oil pressure. 2000 jeep grand cherokee laradoe straight 6 4.0 automatic 4x4 makes tapping sound? what should i...

What kind of sound? If it's a ticking sound from inside the valve cover it could be a bad rocker arm, worn lifter or lifter & cam lobe or broken valve spring (needs to be looked at). If the noise is deep and best heard at the oil pan. it could be a rod bearing or main beginning to go but generally, that lowers oil pressure. Another item that sounds nearly the same is a cracked flywheel. Careful listening can often unravel this or have a very experienced tech look at it....(still your choice on who does the repair).

89 cherokee. 4.2 stroker. good oil pressure but some rattling noise in top end at idle then clears up with throttle. possibly a loose rocker?

Loose rocker, bent rocker, bent push rod, loose or bent rocker stud are a few things that come to mind. Take off the valve covers and with each cylinder at top dead center, check the play on each rocker assembly and inspect for any bent parts. Visually look down, and to the side for any mis-alignment.
