SOURCE: exhaust bolts

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, some ideas you may want to explore or try using (though not technically sound):

  • weld another bolt on top of the defective bolts. The on-board electronics must be disconnected prior to the welding activity;
  • hacksaw a slot and use a wide tipped flat screwdriver;
  • use a blunt chisel or a throw away screwdriver to notch the head and jarr the bolt out;
  • use a long center punch to nick the head and jarr the bolt out.
Of course eventually the bolts must be replaced.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Anyone know where the different length bellhousing bolts go on a 1998 expedition?

Hi James, you may be able to get a copy of the diagram for the bell-housing unit along with the bolt sizes from the parts counterman at your local Ford dealership...tell him the dilemma your in, I'm sure he'll help you out.by making a print-out of the shop manual specific to your vehicle.
Otherwise, by the trial and error method, you can take each bolt and place them in one hole at a time (finger tight) and measure out the the distance between the exposed bolt thread (gap) and the head of the bolt; then measure the thickness of the bolt ears of the bell-housing frame...it may not be an exact science, but then again, you may get lucky.

Starter Bolt Size

you can buy them at autozone,they may even know what size you need. usually starter bolts are the same size and in some cases just the length is different. simply try the one you have in the other hole and if it works then problem solved on the size but the length may still be different.

1999 deville 4.6 engine,cant get alternator to line up,dose it bolt in the top or just ride againest engine

There is a bolt that will go through the unit. There is a spacer missing - it is about this long
----------- < Look around the engine behind where the Alternator was removed and also look on the ground. The spacer is about an inch long and 3/8th of an inch in length. Put this in the top where the bolt goes in and it will take up the slack and position the alternator right where it need to set.
You can get these from your local parts store or used at the salvage yard.

How do I split the DC head from the engine?

I am assuming that you mean the generator head from the engine. If this is so, 1st remove the end cover from the gen. head. You will see a bolt that goes through the rotor shaft to the engine shaft. The engine his a tapered shaft, that the gen head bolts to. 2) Remove the long bolt from the rotor shaft. 3) Remove the 4 long bolts that hold the housing ends together. 4) cut a length of rod that is smaller in diameter than the rotor shaft bolt and about 1/2 inch shorter. This will be used as a push rod to separate the engine shaft from the rotor shaft. 5) There are threads at the beginning(inside) of the rotor shaft. Most likely metric. Find the right size bolt, approx. 1" long. Screw in until contact with the push rod. (If possible, use an impact wrench to make it easy.) Tighten til the shafts "pop loose." One suggestion to keep the engine from rotating while doing this is to remove the spark plug, stick a length of small rope down the hole, leaving some hanging out, rotate engine until piston packs against the rope and stops the rotation. 6)now that the gen head is removed, the engine mounting end can be removed. Good luck.

Does anyone have a diagram for a 1978 caprice alternator belt?

I can't send you a diagram,but it's not too hard to explain. Loosen off the alternator first. Two bolts, one you can see that goes through a bracket on the engine and another that is directly under that bolt on the bottom of the alternator that goes into the engine. Fit your new belt over the fan first, one blade at a time and on the pulley. Run the belt down to the bottom crankchaft pulley and then across to the alternator. Before you tighten the belt make sure that all 3 pulleys are in a straight line when you look from the side. If not move them so they are. Take a long screwdriver and put it in the hole on top of the alternator bracket and pry the alternator over so the belt is snug and a little bit more. Tighten the top bolt first,but be careful because it can strip the threads. Then tighten the bottom bolt.You will probably have to retighten it after a few days because the belt will stretch. If the belt squeals when you start or rev the engine then it needs to be a little tighter. If you strip the top bolt, just take it out and find a smaller one with a nut and washers and use it with the washers on the front to keep the new bolt from pulling through the bracket. Hope this helps.

Wont start battery good altenator good,how to remove starter

The starter bolt actually goes through the motor mount so in order to remove the starter you must support the engine with and engine support or hoist. (some put a jack underneath the oil pan which is not an approved method but it works if that's all you have) Other than that you seem to have the rest under control.
