Question about 1979 Suzuki Gs 550 L

Only three of four cylinders are firing. I recently had the carb cleaned and have changed the spark plugs. What could be the problem?

Usually there are three reasons for backfiring thru the carb.
Not enough fuel, spark timing too early, or an open intake valve.
If the compression is good on all cylinders as you stated, my guess would be spark timing or mixture too lean. Could be a large vac leak somewhere too.
You say you checked the ignition, but do you know for a fact the plugs are all firing at the right time ? You could pull each plug wire and check each cylinder one at a time. Did you change the rotor when you changed the cap, and is there any chance the wires are cross-firing ?

I have a 99 road king flhr that sat for about a year outside. I changed plugs an oil an was running rich an wouldn't idle at low rpm. Clean out the carb an jets an now rear cylinder isn't firing...

Perform a compression test on both cylinders. If there is a significant difference between the two you may have a stuck ring or stuck valve from sitting.

My 650 csr is not running on all fours i determed this mostly by the tempeture of my header pipes three are very hot while 1 is barley warm, i checked for spark and it seems to be ok, this is the left...

Hi there,
You will need to do some diagnosing of the problem. Some things to check
  • compression check across all cylinders. Low compression(less than 100 lbs in a cylinder will prevent it from firing. They should all be with 20 pounds of each other.
  • carby to that cylinder may have a clogged air passage or jet.
  • try a new plug in that cylinder.
  • check for air leaks about the problem cylinder air intake. Use aerosol carb cleaner to spray about the manifold gaskets and carb mount. The revs will change if there is an air leak.
MOst probably you will need to strip and clean down the carbs if you have good compression and spark. Fuel is the only thing left :) Sometimes running some fuel system cleaner additive will also resolve the issue for you without tearing down the carbies. Goodluck regards robotek

P0304* Cylinder #4 Misfire on a 1999 dodge intrepid. were is this cylinder located.

This would be the forth cylinder from the front(where the pulleys,and belts are).There will be a coil,and under the coil,is a boot,connected to the spark plug.The miss fire could be any,of the three.I would replace the spark plugs (all four)and the boots.Then if the miss fire is still there,replace the coil,on number four cylinder.

Plugs 1,3,and 4 are firing good #2 is fouling up causing claddering upon take-off, also when speeds drop under 44mph, have to down-shift to pick up speed. how can I fix this

If three of the four spark plugs are firing good you can eliminate the coils. Most likely if only one plug is fouling with oil it is a leaking valve seal or a broken ring. To determine which is the problem, remove all four spark plugs and complete a compression test of each cylinder. Write down the results to compare with the next step. Each cylinder should be within ten percent of the others, Now, squirt about a tablespoon amount of oil in each cylinder. If there was low compression on the #2 cylinder and the compression increases substantially with the oil inserted you have a broken ring. If there is low to no compression on the #2 cylinder you have a burnt valve. If the compression does not increase and the spark plug fouls with oil you have a bad valve stem seal.

Check for these three necessary elements: spark, fuel, and compression. In order of likelyhood, 1)There's either a plugged up carburetor, 2) defective spark plug, or 3) lack of compression on the non-functioning cylinder.

A new carburetor will definately help. The old carburetor may have some ports still clogged. I would also spray some penetrating oil in the spark plug hole to help loosen up the rings on the piston. It may smoke alittle when you fist start it up. Plus try some "engine start" spray, to see if the engine will crank.

Put new carb on 86 cr 80 ran fine 4 10 minutes then quit changed spark plug and gas still nothing. has spark dont know how hot also changed manifold appeared to be dry rotting still nothing. even attemped...

for any motorcycle to run you need three things. spark, fuel and compression. i see you've tried to get fuel and spark. if you have spark thats one down. dont pour fuel into cylinder. instead spray tiny bit of brakeclean or carb clean into spark plug hole. i have a feeling if you drained your gas after the carb clean the carb most likely sucked bad gas back up and might need cleaned again. ive seen it happen alot on ols bikes.

1990 Subaru Legacy shorted out the ignition coil. I replaced it and in less than 1 mile,it shorted out the new one.

Subaru engines (including Legacy and engines of many other automobiles, GM, etc.) have returned to so-called wasted spark ignition systems since advent of the electronic distributor-less ignition (having been used historically in early engines with magneto ignitions). With this approach, the ignition systems are less expensive and usually quite reliable. At the same time, however, a shorted spark plug (cracked or carbon clogged, etc.) (or bad ignition spark plug wire) grounds both the ignition spark and the false spark being used. This means that it also grounds the corresponding respective ignition spark of the other 180 degree out of phase cylinder (that uses the same the same coil because the spark current is connected to the spark plugs of two cylinders). Since such a defect allows more current to flow in the spark coil to two plugs when the resistance of the spark plug gap disappears due to a cracked plug, etc, it seems likely to hasten coil burn out if the spark plug/plug wire defect is not corrected before installing the new spark coil.

To explain further, wasted spark means that when a cylinder is ready to fire, it gets a spark to its spark plug while part of the spark (from the same coil and current) as a sort of copy is also sent to another cyclinder at the same time but when the piston in that cylinder is exhausting its ignited gases 180 degrees out of phase from when its spark is needed. When the second cylinder is ready to fire and receives its "spark, the first cyclinder the also receivesa "wasted" spark "copy" of the one needed by the second cylinder. Economy is achieved in manufacture because otherwise electronics would have to turn on and off four different spark coils to distribute four different sparks as needed to the four cylinders. With wasted sparks (which are cheap), because the spark current of one coil is connected (internally in the ignition coil unit) to two cylinders that are in the same position but 180 degrees out of phase in firing, the system can turn on and off two spark coils twice as fast with half the electronics and fire two cylinders that are 180 degrees out of phase. A four cylinder engine thus uses only two coils, a six cylinder engine, three coils, etc., in a wasted spark system.
