SOURCE: i need the step by step procedure for adjusting

Pop the cover off, turn the rotor until the C mark is aligned, Then loosen up the 12 mm nut that is on the 10 mm headed screw. Then loosen up the 10 mm headed screw. When the screw is loosened up it will take up slack and put spring pressure on the rod that puts pressure on the cam chain. Now that its taken up the slack tighten down the 10 mm headed stud and then the 12 mm locknut. That should take out all play in the cam chain tensioner. The cam chain tensioner is located under the carb boots from the engine to the carbs.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Hello, I have a 1985 cbx 550 f with loud cam chain

sorry to tell you this but it might be the head. This model ran a no bearing head for the cams and they wear out. If it is the chain you got lucky, there are after market quality chains and tensioners out there

SOURCE: vt500 c ticking sound. Cam chain tensioners

You have a self adjusting cam chain tensioner. It is sold as an assembly. Take out the complete unit and replace it with a new one. The springs are not bad , the device that keeps the pressure on the tensioner is slipping causing a ticking sound.

SOURCE: i have a 1980 kz1300 that starts up but mis fires

Basic tune up. May need the carbs cleaned, new plugs/wires, and ignition system gone over, including points cleaning/replacement (if equipped) and checking for proper operation of alternator charge coil and rectifier/regulator.

Ensure battery is properly charged.

I need to adjust the cam chain tension on a 1980 honda cx 500 custom. Where is it located and how do i do it? Do you have any pics that can be attached?

Take off the tappet hole inspection cover behind the cylinder on top of the engine case. Remove the tappet hole inspection cover underneath the radiator in the front of the motor. Put a 17 mm socket on an extension with a breaker bar in the front hole and turn the motor over manually until the top dead center (TDC) mark for the number 1 cylinder appears in the other hole.behind the right cylinder is a gold 10 mm bolt coming out of the back of the block. Loosen it one turn and re tighten it. You have just adjusted your cam chain. If you ever have to take off the rear cover to replace the water pump seal and you just happen to have a cx650 self adjusting cam chain tensioner, it will fit right in so you can forget about adjusting your cam chain ever again.

How do you adjust the timing chain? does the bike have to be running or anything like that??

No! Generally, the timing chain or camchain that controls the valves is tensioned automatically. To change the position of the timing is not possible without a tear down of the top end of the motor, but moving chain just one tooth would result in severe damage to your valves. piston, rockers and cams etc. Minute valve timing is achieved by camshaft node shape. Camchain tensioners are so designed as to take up the slack on the trailing side of the chain. when chain begins to stretch and wear past this tensioners limit, your chain MUST be replaced before inevitable engine death or worse!! Electrical timing on post breaker points bikes (mid 1970's) is controlled by the placement of stator backing plate in relation to the pulse pick up coil. Some engines do not have any room for change here, others have about 6 degrees rotation. This can only be done with a stationary motor and is a matter of trial and error. Generall a mark is etched at TDC as is the magneto rotor. Your bikes make, model and fear would be needed for further assistance. Cheers.

My kz1300 only starts with the clutch in-and the neutral light dont lite up.I checked the neutral lite bulb and its good. anyway to trouble shhot the switches-i hate to just throw parts at it. Thanks,Doug

the nutral switch would be a simple open /closed switch located near the shifter . meaning if it is in neutral the switch should allow power thrugh and if it is not in neutral there should be no continuity.

Timimg chain tension

replace.
and when you replace, also replace gears, as a new chain will eat up the old gears, and vise-versa.
