Question about 2002 BMW R 1150 GS Adventure

1 Answer

How do I change a light bulb in the ABS system in a BMW 2002 1150 GS.

Thanks for the information. This may be helpful in the future. For now, I was able to change the ABS bulbs in the dash panel by using a small probe mirror (similar to a dentist) to see behind the dash. From this, I could see the bulb location, reach behind and change without removing the headlight or anything else.

Easy job, but you need to take a few bits apart-
1. Remove the screen
2. Remove the silver plastic cover above the clocks (torx screws, should be in the tool kit)
3. With a little fiddling, you should now be able to get to the lamps at the back of the consul.

The bulb for the ABS may be easy to access on the Adventure. Mine is a standard GS.

It looks like you need to remove the headlamp as well (what a rubbish design). Carry out the previous steps.
(viewed standing in front of the bike, looking at the lights)
Unscrew headlamp cover screws (there is one between the lights, and one each on the left and right) and take the cover off.
There are two bolts to the left and right of each light, undo these.
Now look at the 'larger' light. In the bottom right corner you will see it is attached by a plastic ball joint. Carefully lever this up, it will come apart.
You can now pull the headlamp assembly forward to access the instrument lamps!
This is also a good time to fit led lamps!
As an aside, it is unusual for these lamps to actually blow. More oftern than not, there is a brake in the cluster light loom. If your light still doesnt work, trace the loom back (it connects under the tank). The outer sheath on this loom is pretty inflexible, and hidden under the sheath are a number of connectors. The loom often fills with water, and corrodes the connection. You can buy just this part of the loom (not cheap) or repair it yourself.
    Good luck!

Hi, Anonymous if your headlight is not working the first thing to check is the headlight bulb for damaged filaments then check your light circuit fuse, that being said the usual suspects are:
1. Faulty ground or power supply to headlight bulb socket.
2. Faulty hi/lo beam switch.
3. Faulty ignition switch.
4. Fuse is good but no continuity on both sides.
5. Faulty wiring between battery positive and headlight bulb socket.

Brake failure light.

This is normal. Its part of the start up diagnostics where the sensors needs to see the wheels rotate 1 or 2 revolutions to verify proper functioning of the ABS system.
