Question about Harley Davidson FLHTC Electra Glide Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

Seems battery (new) on 2006 Electra Glide Classic is draining. Bike won't start......starter sounds like a vaccuum cleaner, just whining. It's not the stator.....bike was charging on highway at 14+ during ride. I don't know if it is the starter or battery. A couple days ago the starter sounded like it was slapping hard when I tried to start bike. I thought this was just normal. I haven't had the bike for a month yet. Lester

If you can hear your starter running and the engine is not turning over, the problem is your starter. Specifically, the "overrunning clutch" is bad in the starter. If you are mechanically inclined and have the tools to take the starter off your bike, you can repair this yourself and save some money. If not, you'd be better just to have the shop replace the entire starter. The time involved in disassembling the starter, replacing the clutch, and reassembly will eat up any savings you had recognized by repairing the starter.

Good Luck

Battery is charged, Starter Whines and is turning but bike won't fire off, 2009 Street Glide

is your engine turning over, if it is, pull your spark plugs and clean them. this happens on my 98 Heritage Softail Classic. It sounds funny but from long warm ups with choke pulled they get carbon build up and this keeps the plug from firing. If your motor is not turning over then you Bendix gear is out on your starter.

Harleys pull a lot of amps starting,, Just because the battery says 12v doesn't mean the charge is handling the draw when trying to start them ,, get the battery LOAD checked,, remember also,, Harley's are known for drawing Juice when starting , thats why any dealer or shop will tell you that if you start one be sure and drive it a while,, start and stop trips eat up the battery since the alt won't keep up with the charging. when I leave mine for any time, I use one of the trickle charge units just to keep it at full

No start 09 Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Sounds like your charging system is not charging the battery.

Put a volt meter on the battery, run the engine up to maybe 2,000 RPM. The voltage must be at least 13.8V, but not more than 14.5.

If that is all OK, your battery is worn out, and is not holding sufficient reserve. It would need to be replaced.

Have a 2006 ultra classic and having a starting problem

First load test the batt, it can show good with no drain on it but drop below a usable voltage with a load. If you do have a good batt. check your grounds for tightness and if their clean.
