Swap out your gas. I had the same problem and it turned out to be bad gas. Is your tank rusted?

If you are using choke to make it run, then the mixture is to weak. As its an old bike has anybody changed the main jet to a smaller on at some time? You can also look at the main needle itself. Some models hace a little clip on the top of the needle. If you move the clip down (there are little notches) it will raise the needle and richen the mixture. I would definately get the carb apart and check it has the correct jets and is clean.

Bike wont kick start or idle , it will coast

first drain the carby, then set your air mixture screw 2 turns out, from the fully turned in position. The starting proceedure is as follows, when the engine is COLD, turn on fuel, pull on the choke fully, and kick the engine over. DO NOT use any throttle, when the engine is cold, and the choke is on. Remember Choke on, NO throttle.
When warm, no choke, and a little throttle when kicking.

I have a vtr 250 that i cant keep running, it will start but as soon as the choke is taken off and i let it idle it stops, even taking it for a bit of a ride around the yard to warm up wont keep it going....

Try to adjust the idle speed Mr.If your bikes been sitting over winter there could be a blockage in the idle circuit in your carby,in which place it will need to be cleaned.....Was i helpfull??. hope this helped.

Bike wont idle without choke

you need to take your carb off give it as good cleaning. also check your intake gaskets where the manifold joins the jugs and the black rubber one where the carb joins the manifold. You def have air/fuel problem going on. also check your vscume hose to the carb but im thinking that is not it.

GS500E Wont Start when Hot

well this sounds like several things so here goes ,could be that the carbs are out of sinc ,or the timing or the valves , my best guess is that the timing and the carbs, my best advise is to get a manuel from the your local bike shop that is if you are able to work on this your self ,if you dont have exsperiance with bikes i would take it to a pro , as a biker your bike should never be done half assed your life depends on it being right .

Bike won't stay running without the choke out.

I also own a 1980 GS550L that had a similar problem, first thing I did to fix it is to add a can of seafoam to a half of tank of gas or less. The bike can run on pure seafoam if needed. Let it run for 3-5 minutes and shut if off. Let it sit for another 5 minutes then start the bike and take it for a ride. After 20 or 30 miles go ahead and fill the tank up with gas. Within a tank or so you should start noticing it idleing better and more power. On the GS550 the choke self adjusts as you use the throttle. There is no need to push it in the rest of the way. Even if you are extremely hard on the bike opening the throttle all of the way it will never go all the way in unless you push it all of the way in. I own two GS's and niether of which prefer to idle if I push the choke all of the way in. Once I did this and learned just to leave the choke alone and let it stay where it self adjusted as I rode the bike it has never stalled since at a light. You should be able to pick up a can of seafoam at any local autozone or advanced autoparts. Most likely your idle circuit on the carb is currently gummed up and the choke circuit is all that is that is working. Myself and freinds have used Seafoam to solve this problem and just about anything with a motor that was parked with gas in for an extended amount of time without any stabilizer added. It's well worth the $8 versus pulling the carbs apart.

Bike wont idle and power constantly dieing and recovering

check to see if you have gas in the oil from a carb leaking down which will cause the idle speed to drop when motor warms up.pick up idle run for awhile then plugs you said a carby problem.
