dunno if that's backwards. Anyway: adjusted to just minimum sane play it barely engages with the lever fully in. If I would have to adjust the lever to any shorter position (for smaller hands) it would probably not engage fully. I understand there is an adjustment at the clutch arm down behind the gearbox. If I adjust there what will happen? I'm guessing I can wind that one in a bit then loosen the wire a bit. Will this solve the problem or will I be back at where I am now?,The arm only has limited travel, and there is a screw adjustment between the arm and the end of the clutch push-rod. Not sure what it is on the 1100s; it could be a hex headed bolt or an allen grub, but it's a bugger to get at because the swinging arm is so close. There's going to be some sort of locknut which will have to be slackened first. Make small adjustments, screwing in towards the 'box, and trying the clutch lever each time. ,,,

You should adjust the cable at the handlebars until it has loads of play and hardly moves the cable when you use the lever, then adjust the same cable at the gearbox end until it comes back into acceptable range with correct amount of play, then tighten locknut.
This is just taking up normal wear in the clutch. Note as guzzi clutches wear you get a clanking vibration noise from them at idle, its normal.

SOURCE: Clutch bite is too far away from handlebar

There should be about 1/8" end play on the clutch handle. Adjust the cable at the handlebars where the cable goes into the clutch lever housing. Screw the adjuster inward until the end play is present. Some bikes have an adjuster at the gearbox where the cable hooks up.

Suzuki RM80 clutch will not disengage.


Hey Anon,
First, make sure the clutch is adjusted correctly..This video is a basic tutorial.. use it for a guide BUT DO the steps as I TELL YOU..
1. Loose the cable adjuster at the handle bar.. run the adjuster in - (give it as much slack as you can)
2. The clutch actuator lever on the engine case should be able to move about 8mm (.325") before it starts to disengage (gets hard to move)..
3. Adjust the cable at the bottom adjustment to take up any slack at this point.. ..you MIGHT/should be able to feel some (NOT FULL TENSION) clutch disengagement in the handle bar (clutch) lever at this point.. IF YOU CAN'T - tighten the cable at the bottom adjustment ONE round at a time until you can feel (a small amount) tension and have at least/about 12mm (.48") max. of play in the lever (BETWEEN THE LEVER AND THE MOUNT when YOU START TO FEEL TENSION... - NOW - in the clutch lever (handle bar).. when you can feel tension in the lever... >> you should start adjusting the lever to have (at least) approximately 1/8" - (3mm) of play (gap) between the lever and mount.. when you have this set correctly, the clutch adjustment question is eliminated. If the adjustment has not helped and you had to do A LOT of adjusting. you need to replace the clutch cable.. and do this adjustment process again. NOW adjustment is NOT part of your problem. If this fixes your problem GREAT!!
.. If not.. now.. we have to move internally..The next issue will be grooves worn into the arms of the clutch basket be the fiber clutch plate ears..(see picture) (the ones that keep the plates stationary when you shift to help disengage the clutch). Also check the actuator arm (see picture below) for wear..

Ok.. if you have gotten this far and everything seems good, reinstall AFTER YOU HAVE METICULOUSLY CLEANED THE BASKET!! The clutch should be working now.

Why won't the bike shift right ? 1st&2nd seem like draging or sliping .what do I do


Adjust the clutch at the clutch itself using information in the workshop manual and then properly adjust the clutch cable. In your case pulling the clutch lever isn't disengaging the clutch plates far enough. If there is a lot of play in the clutch lever, just adjusting out the free play might fix it.

    • 1 Take the motorcycle for at least a fifteen minute test drive. Use this time to determine if the clutch needs to "grab" more or less. For example, if you pull in the clutch lever and it is difficult to shift, it grabs too much. On the other hand, if when you let the clutch lever out the motorcycle is low on power, it is not grabbing enough.
    • 2 Set the motorcycle on its kickstand or, if like some dirt bikes, it does not have one, prop it against a solid object so that it will not fall over while being worked on.
    • 3 Loosen the clutch cable if the clutch needs to "grab" more, via the clutch cable adjuster bolts near the crankcase, until there is a small amount of play in the cable. You should be able to move the clutch lever just slightly with no change in the clutch's actuation.
    • 4 Tighten the clutch cable if you need the clutch to "grab" less. Tighten the cable until there is only a small amount of play left in the cable. Pulling the lever from now on will make a much larger difference in clutch actuation.
    • 5 Tighten the clutch cable adjusters near the crank case and take the motorcycle for a test ride in an open, private area. While riding, use your left hand to adjust the barrel adjuster where the cable housing meets the clutch lever to fine tune the adjustments made previously. When you feel the clutch is set up properly, return to your work area and tighten the barrel adjuster stop so that it will not loosen as you ride.

Primary chain hitting case on clutch housing, cable nearly fully adjusted clutch slips if adjust any more. bad grinding noise from chain hitting case can i adjust clutch any more in housing?


The primary chain adjustment has nothing to do with the clutch. Take the small upper inspection cover off the primary cover and use your finger to check the primary chain tension. It should have 3/8 to 1/2 inch up and down movement in the top run of the chain when the engine is cold. To adjust, loosen the lock nut on the primary chain adjuster on the bottom of the primary case. Turn the screw upward to tighten the chain, downward to loosen. Once set, tighten the locknut.

To adjust the clutch, loosen the clutch cable adjuster as much as you can. Remove the derby cover from the primary cover. Remove the spring and the locknut. Turn the adjuster screw counterclockwise as far as it will go. Turn it back in 1/4 turn and replace the lock nut and the spring. Replace derby cover. Adjust the clutch cable so that you have about a 1/8 inch play at the hand lever.

The 1234 knob on the cluch handle does that ajust the cluch


no, only how far in the handle rests(for adjusting to smaller hands) if you have a hydraulic clutch, all you can do is bleed it. if it is a cable the fine adjust is the small wheel on the inner side of the clutch lever mount, and the gross adjust is on the case next to where the cable goes into the case. hope that helps

Clutch engages to far from the hand grip


if you follow clutch cable down you will find your mid range adjustment use 1/2 in and 9/16 in wrench and back off now go down to your primary cover and remove inspection cover (where clutch cable goes into primary cover) take off cover and spring hex nut.with screw driver turn adjusting screw counterclockwise until lightly seated back off 1/4 to 1/2 turn replace spring hex lock (spring facing out) go back to mid-range adjuster on cable adjust so you have an 1/8 in free play (you can use a nicheol) to set freeplay at lever pull lever in three times to check and set

Loose slack in my clutch cable in my 08 buell blast


Your clutch needs to be adjusted. Before you adjust it at the lever you must adjust the clutch itself.

On the primary cover is the clutch inspection cover just behind the driver footpeg bracket. Unfortunately to get to it you must remove the Y-bracket and it's a PITA. The nuts that hold it are in a tight space under the seat just below the base of the fuel tank. Before you remove the bracket completely, just loosen the nuts as far as you can without removing them. You may have enough play to pull the bracket out of the way of the clutch inspection cover.

3 allen head screws hold the inspection cover in place. Be careful not to damage the paper gasket. You should be able to reuse it but to be safe, get yourself an extra before performing the adjustment. It's cheap insurance.

With the cover off you will be able to see the face of the clutch pack. In the center is a stamped steel nut held in place with a spring. It is a type of lock nut that will keep the clutch from readjusting itself. Simply pull this out (nut & spring) and set it aside.

In the center you will now see a shaft with a slot in it. This is where you will make the clutch adjustment. Using a regular screw driver simply turn the shaft clockwise until it firmly seats. Do not crank it down hard! Snug it down once, back it out a turn, then snug it down again. Once snugged down, back it out only 1/4 turn.

Replace the lock nut and spring being careful not to tighten or loosen the adjustment you made any more than needed to get the nut to seat inside the clutch. Once the cover is in place the spring will press against the lock nut keeping it secured.

Make sure where the gasket sits is clean before replacing the gasket and inspection cover. Do nut over tighten the 3 screws that hold the cover. It is only aluminum that they are threading into.

Replace/tighten the Y-bracket for the pegs back into place. If you do not have small hands it might be a good idea to have a small-handed person available to assist you in getting the nuts back on the bracket bolts and hand tightened as much as possible for you.

Now that the clutchis adjusted, you can make adjustments to the cable itself to get the free play out of the clutch lever. The cable adjustment is made at the adjuster located roughly halfway between the lever and the bottom of the bike. It's covered by a rubber boot that keeps out dirt and moisture. Carefully pull the boot to expose the adjustment nuts. The clutch lever is considered properly adjusted when there is 1mm of play between the lever and where it hits the stop near the pivot bolt.

It's really an easy job but don't try to adjust it only at the cable. Adjusting the clutch pack itself it really a breeze and even your shifting should be a little smoother. Good luck! =)
