Question about 2004 kawasaki ZRX 400 II

1 Answer

The bike starts up fine, but as it heats up the bike's idling becomes erratic. When riding the bike, the bike is sluggish in acceleration. There is also a strong smell of petrol. Current diagnostic is that it is either the spark-plugs not firing properly or with the carburetors. Can you shed some light on this problem? Regards, Quinton Jacobs

Hi! Pretty much fuel flooding. I strongly suggest that you get a good set of spark plugs and plug wires for better fuel burning. This may resolve the problem. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

You need to tunes up the carbs. The small jets in the carbs can easily run at idle when partially clogged but can't sustain a high rev without bucking the bike.

depending on the machine it is, this could be the AIR/FUEL screw it too lean.
Often it is the AP (accelerator pump) on the carb. This has diaphragm and a pin. If this gets dirt in it it can cause erratic very fast idle, once revved or "bliped". Simply remove carb. On the bottom is the bowl, and another cover. Remove the bowl and this other cover and delicately cleam both. If diaphragm is dirty chances are bowl full of gunk too.

Sounds like you need to have the carb jets cleaned. You can try seafoam that you add to fuel tank and ride it to see if that will clear it up, but I have had the same problem with my VF750C Honda Magna with only 8000miles and mine turns out to be fine tuning the injectors. This is only after the carbs have been reworked and cleaned.

Hard to start. when accelerating it seems very

If the engine is not spitting or sputtering, the plugs are fine. If they were fouled, the engine would not run well at all. Probably just the fuel is stale. Today's fuels don't hold up in the tank like they use to do. Once you get that fuel run out and put some fresh fuel in the bike it should run like it always did before the surgery.

High idle when the bikes hot.

You either need to clean and adjust the carbs on it, or you have a vacuum leak somewhere.
