The 10th digit of the Vin # is the year. Prior to 2001 they used letters. If the 10th digit is a #, then it is a 200# if it is a letter, starting Z count the letters backwards. 2000 is z, 1999 is y, and so on.

9th Character - The check digit "character or digit 9" in the sequence of a vehicle identification number (VIN) built beginning with model year 1981 (when the 17 character digit format was established) can best be described as identifying the VIN accuracy.
A check digit shall be part of each vin (since 1981) and shall appear in position nine (9) of the VIN on the vehicle and on any transfer documents containing the vin prepared by the manufacturer to be given to the first owner for purposes other than resale. Thus, the vins of any two vehicles manufactured within a 30 year period shall not be identical. The check digit means a single number or letter "x" used to verify the accuracy of the transcription of the vehicle identification number.
After all other characters in the VIN have been determined by the manufacturer the check digit is calculated by carrying out a mathematical computation specified. This is based on vin position, sample vin, assigned value code, weight factor and multiply assigned value times weight factors. The values are added and the total is divided by 11. The remainder is the check digit number. The correct numeric remainder - zero through nine (0-9) will appear. However, if the remainder is 10 the letter "X" is used to designate the check digit value/number.
10th character- Identifies the model year. For example: 1988(J), 1989(K), 1990(L), 1991(M), 1992(N), 1993(P), 1994(R), 1995(S), 1996(T), 1997(V), 1998(W), 1999(X), 2000(Y)------2001(1), 2002(2), 2003(3), 2004(4), 2005(5), 2006(6), 2007(7), 2008(8)

Hi can you please tell me how old my yzf 250 is as when i bought it they told me it was 2004 but now i am thinking of selling it people tell me it is older? chassis number is cg10c00184l. thanks paul...

That does not seem to be enough numbers to be a VIN, nor does it look like a Yamaha VIN to me - at least not a post-1980's number.

The VIN can be found stamped into the steering head. Take a look at this site: http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vin/yamaha.asp

I hope this helped.

Locate the VIN on the front of the frame if it's still there. Then try this site to break it down: http://www.motorcycle-journal.com/forum/tips-training/5800-how-decode-vin-number.html

Year identification of yamaha yz250 engine number 1lu oo3560

The engine number will not give you what you need. The VIN is the key. You will find the VIN number stamped into the center steering stem that the forks attach to. Call a Yamaha dealer with the VIN and they can tell you what year and model of bike you have.

A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

What year is my 250 yamaha

Easy to find! Just phone your local Yamaha dealer with the VIN numbers and they can give you all the information you want. In the off chance the dealer is too busy or just doesn't want to please a customer, just Google ' Kawasaki motorcycle texas ' and you will have plenty of other dealers you can call. Use your own state or any state in the Google search.

Year

Find the model production year, usually found on the same plate as the vin. Then add one year. For instance if the bike was produced in 2001, then its a 2002 model.
