You should only use a JASO MA certified motorcycle oil. 10w-40 for cold climate and 20w-50 for warmer climate. Do not use any oil that is Energy Conserving it will shorten the life of your wet clutch and transmission gears. Synthetic oils will help you bike run cooler and shift easier especially in hot weather.

Synthetic is the way to go.....I recommend Motol,...a trusted and true French Synthetic oil.....VERY great for Japanese bikes, especially older ones....although, I would suggest a full sump and engine flush first,... just to get rid of the old oil.....Happy New Year

Shell Rotella T and Shell Rotella T Synthetic for diesel engines are JASO MA rated and will also work well in your motorcycle for less money.

How much and what type of oil

I have a 1985 Maxim XJ700NC There is a window on the side case for proper oil levels when the bike is on the center stand. The only recommended oil should be Yamalube 20-40. Do not use automotive oils. There is a slight difference in the makeup of the oil as the bike is oil cooled, and you have a "Wet Clutch". The energy conservation oils have emulsions in them that will ruin your clutch plates.
