Remove the cylinder head cover then tighten the four head bolts holding the head and cylinder to the gearbox. Hopefully you will not need to find and install a new cylinder gasket.

The Honda F23 series engine is a 2.3 liter, all aluminum block, 16 valve, Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) motor used in the Honda Accord (1994 - 2002) and Acura Cl (2.3). Timing belt failure may result in either the intake or exhaust valves bending after contacting the pistons. If the belt has broken, a Compression Leakage test is advised to determine if the valves require replacement. Compression leakage from any of the cylinders (indicating bent valves) will require the removal of the cylinder head. An inspection and rebuild of the head by a reputable automotive machine shop is recommended in lieu of doing it yourself. This DIY article only covers belt replacement. The belt replacement interval is either 90,000 or 105,000 miles based on the specific model year. Check the owner's manual for the specific service interval. If the mileage is below the threshold but the vehicle is over 7 years old, consider performing a replacement as preventative maintenance (PM). Timing belts cannot be visually inspected for wear. My 85 honda accord is blowing white smoke out of the exhaust pipe in the rear and it appears to have something dripping onto the heat shield under the car, what do you think could be the problem?


check the brake system for any leaks. check the master cylinder for leaking out the rear of it. if you take the master cylinder nuts of that hold it to the power brake booster and slide the master off the booster and look at the rear of the master to check for a fluid leak or dampness. if you see this replace the master cylinder. also sometimes the power booster will suck the fluid were its drawn into the engine and burnt and the smoke will look white. another thing that causes white smoke is a bad head gasket as the coolant is sucked into the combustion chamber and burnt, it can also leak externally and cause the dripping you see.

check for coolant leak on and around the engine. it could be a water pump, frost plug, heater hose, head gasket. is there water in the oil if so this is an indication of a bad head gasket crack cylinder head or block.

Small amount of milk in oil


To check whether the coolant is entering into the engine oil or not, do the following.
- Park the car on a level floor.
- Check engine oil level on the dip stick and mark it with nail polish. Let it dry. Confirm the oil level. Put the dip stick back.
- Apply about 10 psi external pressure to the coolant system, while keeping caps in place.
NOTE: It is advised to use the coolant system tester. In case the tester is not available, ask any technician to do it for you. Or you can use a bicycle pump with gauge installed on it to pressure the system up to 10 psi. The system should held the pressure up to 30 Seconds.
- If the pressure is maintained for 30 Seconds every thing is good at this time. Ensure that the air is not leaking through your external pump system with which you are testing the system.
If the pressure drops, there will be a leakage some where. Either external or internal. External leakage can easily be observed while carefully examining the hose pipes, clips and joints on the engine.
Internal leakage can be determined by checking the engine oil level again.
- Take out the dip stick and inspect the oil level. If the engine oil level increases it confirm the internal leakage.
- Internal coolant leakage could be due to:-
1. Cylinder head bolts loose or under torqued. (Re-Torque the bolts).
2. Burnt cylinder head gasket. (Always use original spares).
3. Cylinder and head surfaces warped. (Surface grind the cylinder head on surface grinding machine and replace the gasket).
4. Any corroded lid in the cylinder block or cylinder head assembly.
5. Oil cooler, if any.
If the test report of above mentioned procedure is found to be OK, start the engine, pull up dip stick a little, open breather tube from the tappet cover, keep it open and keep the engine start for as long as the water vapors coming out of these points disappear and the engine oil will become clear to its original color.
At times it happens that immediately after replacing the cylinder head gasket some coolant may flow into the engine unavoidably and keep contaminating the engine oil for quite some time.

Removal
  1. Drain engine cooling system.
  1. Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
  1. Remove engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600) including air cleaner outlet tube (9B659) .
  1. Loosen drive belt tensioner (6B209). Remove drive belts (8620) .
  1. If LH cylinder head (6049) is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove oil filler cap (6766) .
    1. Remove power steering pump front mounting bracket retaining bolts.
    1. Remove generator (GEN) (10346) and belt idler pulley (8678).
    1. Remove power steering pump/generator bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected, place pump/bracket assembly aside in a position to prevent fluid from leaking out.
  1. If RH cylinder head is being removed, perform the following:
    1. Remove drive belts .
    1. If equipped with A/C, remove mounting bracket retaining bolts. Leave hoses connected and position A/C compressor (19703) aside.
    1. Remove positive crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) (6A666) .
  1. Remove upper intake manifold (9424) .
  1. Remove valve cover retaining bolts.
  1. Remove fuel injection supply manifold (9F792).
  1. Remove lower intake manifold as outlined.
  1. Remove exhaust manifolds (9430) as outlined.
  1. Loosen rocker arm seat retaining bolts enough to allow rocker arm (6564) to be lifted off the push rod (6565) and rotate to one side.
  1. Remove push rods . Identify position of each push rod . Push rods should be installed in their original position during assembly.
  1. Remove cylinder head retaining bolts and discard.
  1. Remove cylinder heads .
  1. Remove and discard old head gaskets (6051) .
Installation
  1. NOTE: Lightly oil all bolts and stud bolt threads before installation except those specifying special sealant.
    Clean cylinder head, intake manifold , valve cover (6582) and head gasket surfaces. If cylinder head was removed for head gasket replacement, check flatness and sealing areas for scratches of cylinder head and cylinder block gasket surfaces. Refer to Section 03-00 for procedure.
  2. Position new head gaskets onto cylinder block (6010) using cylinder head to block dowels (6A008) for alignment.

      • Tighten bolt an additional 85-95 degrees.
      • Go to next bolt in sequence.
    1. Short bolts:
      • 10-20 Nm (7-15 lb-ft).
      • Tighten bolt an additional 85-95 degrees.
      • Go to next bolt in sequence.

  8. For each valve, rotate crankshaft (6303) until valve tappet (6500) rests on the heel (base circle) of the camshaft lobe, before tightening rocker arm seat retaining bolts to 7-15 Nm (5-11 lb-ft) maximum.
  9. Lubricate all rocker arms with Engine Assembly Lubricant D9AZ-19579-D or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M99C80-A. Final-tighten the rocker arm seat bolts to 30-40 Nm (22-30 lb-ft). For final tightening, camshaft (6250) may be in any position.
  10. Install exhaust manifolds as outlined.
  11. Install lower intake manifold as outlined.
  12. Install fuel injection supply manifold .
  13. Position valve cover and new valve cover gasket (6584) on cylinder head and install retaining bolts. Note location of ignition wire routing clip stud bolts. Tighten retaining bolts to 9-12 Nm (7-9 lb-ft).
  14. Install upper intake manifold .Install spark plugs (12405) , if removed.
  15. Connect ignition wires to the spark plugs .
  16. If LH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install oil filler cap.
    1. Install generator/power steering pump mounting bracket.
    1. Install generator .
    1. Install main accessory drive belt tensioner .
    1. Install power steering pump (3A674) .
    1. Install power steering pump support bracket.If RH cylinder head is being installed, perform the following:
    1. Install positive crankcase ventilation valve .
    1. If equipped with A/C, install A/C compressor mounting brackets (2882) and A/C compressor .
  17. Install drive belt and tighten to specification.
  18. Connect battery ground cable .
  19. Install air cleaner outlet tube.

I have a 2002 mozda protege and just had the cylinder head fixed and nwo the oil is mixing with the coolant in the radiator..... now whats wrong????


the repair is either done incorrectly, or you have a cracked head or damaged engine block from an overheating event-You should be able to determine where the issue is by pressurizing the cooling system with a pump, checking for leakage in the head or cylinders

I have a crack in my engine whats the best way to fix it?


It really depends on where the crack is located.
The engine is actually separated by the engine block and the cylinder head.
CYLINDER HEAD - located on the top of the engine where the spark plug is located
ENGINE BLOCK - located just below the cylinder head and separated by a gasket.

I believe you can buy them separately.
Because if there's a crack on the engine replacing the part that has a crack is the best thing to do to avoid loose compression and oil leakage.

Hi, This like a problem with the head! I would do a cylinder leakage test on 3 or 4 with the engine cold. You may be looking at a cracked head. Esp if this engine has been over-heated! Frankster016
