If you are putting the bike in gear while it is running, and the drive shaft is spinning but the cycle is not moving forward, then you have a broken or stripped gear in the final drive. Try draining the hypoid gear oil and open the fill cap to inspect for damage and metal chips.Your best option is going to be to replace the final drive assembly. You may be able to purchase all the parts to rebuild the old one , but all the bearings and gears may cost as much as the whole assembly.A good option may be to look for a good used one.

I agree with what Heimlich said.
I know the final drive from a 535 Virago will work also as they are exactly the same except for finish. The final drive from a 535 is polished.

On my 2002 Vstar 1100, the starter turns over, the gears are moving, but the crank shaft is not spinning and the bike will not start. Thanks in advance for your help. Jk

Hi, Jkipper687 the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Unsure to what the problem maybe

Your hub gear spline may be toast. You will have to remove the rear tire and shaft to check the splines on the drive hub. That is providing your clutch plates are not worn out.
