How to fix the yamaha krypton starter not engaging the engine

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. I wonder if the clutch "basket" broke off an "ear"?...I hate to say it,..but you might be in for a tear down and rebuild. Start with the parts you can access, clean/fix/replace with motor still in; clutch plates/basket, "properly" fix the kickstarter spring/gear unit,...try to find thae cause of the metal filings,..check the clutch basket..etc. GL. [re-post with what's going on].

I have a 1999 yz 400f and it seems to be stuck in 2nd gear

Hi, Williamsa585 and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch not disengaging.
2. Bent shift shaft.
3. Shift fork bent or seized.
4. Gear seized on the shaft.
5. Gear positioning lever binding.
6. Shift return springs weak or broken.
7. Shift return spring pin loose
8. Shift mechanism arm spring is broken.
9. Shift mechanism arm is broken.
10. Shift drum is broken.

Wont ride in any gear

hey mate, the first thing i would check is the drive belt and associated idler pulleys make sure these are all in tact and free from grass build up also check belt alignment ensure it is on the pulleys still and belt guides in tact and check belt for cracking and excess length(stretching), if all of this appears okay i would probably say that the problem is internal in the gearbox and would recommend taking it to your local small engine mechanic

Will main clutch casing fit yz 125 2001 from 1997?

Hey Ryan! Long time since hearing from you.

When you say "main clutch casing" do you mean the right side cover for the gearbox or do you mean the primary driven gear (AKA "clutch basket") that the clutch boss (AKA "clutch hub") and all the clutch plates fit into?

If you mean the right outer casing > they are slightly different, '97 pn 4JY-15431-10-00 and 2001 pn 4JY-15431-12-00. The entire clutch is the same from 1997 through 2001.

2003 yz 125 clutch

This sounds like dirt and grit in the oil is causing the clutch to grab. Change the gearbox oil. Ride the bike for a couple of hours using the clutch often. Now drain the oil again and put in fresh oil. This will flush out the dirt and grit. Use 10w40 motor oil. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. Do not use synthetics or oils with "special" additives.

Other possible causes are > a need to adjust the clutch lever for 1/4" free play at end of the lever > warped clutch plates or friction plates > Clutch has been worked on and assembled wrong > low oil level in the gearbox > frozen clutch hub bearing > Incorrect clutch cable being used.

Please post a comment after the double oil change. The 2x oil change is a cheap way to eliminate a possible cause and hey, it isn't gonna hurt anything. If you still have the problem I can help with a clutch rebuild.

YZ not starting

I don't think this is a float issue. One way to check is to turn the gas off, take the bowl off the carb, hold the float up, and turn the gas back in. If fuel flows, the float needle is toast. It sounds suspiciosly like a worn topend, but it could also be a clogged jet ot fuel filter, or a faulty CDI.
