I would say "Yes" as Harley has been shipping their bike jetted as lean as possible to satisfy the EPA or other regulatory agencies in the country of destination. Anything you change anything on a motorcycle, you effect the entire system. Since the SE free flow mufflers were added, the bike could probably benefit from a little richer jet. If you change the air filter to a less restrictive one, that will probably lean the mixture even more.

One trick that I've been doing for years is to remove the carb and drill out the anti-tamper plug so that I can get to the idle mixture screw. Then go up one size on the slow jet. If it's a #42, go up to a #45. Then, take the needle out of the slide and install a 3mm flat washer that is about 0.020" thick (0.5mm) onto the long end of the needle and reinstall it. This will RAISE the needle just a bit to richen up the midrange just a bit. Put the carb back on and adjust the idle mixture for the highest smoothest idle and reset the idle speed. Works like a charm. I'd also replace the carb seal where it goes into the the intake to prevent vacuum leaks.

Good Luck
Steve

I bought a 2005 XL 883 its been customized by the previous owner, it has a two into one exhaust, screamin eagle air cleaner, its always had a cough, it had a 200 mianjet, 42 low, what jets should it h

Hi Anonymous, the stock 883 came with a 160 main jet and a 42 slow speed jet. As far as the juggs go see if you can find casting numbers on the cylinder base. Does your bike have the power of a 1200 or an 883? As far as the coughing goes look for any telltale signs of oil like stains around the intake manifold to the heads or gun powder like residue at the exhaust ports, a sure sign of leakage.

Good luck

Carb removal 2005 harley davidson 883 sportster

The airbox/air filter assembly holds the carb in place. Once the air cleaner assembly is removed, you can pull the carb out of the rubber seal that connects it to the intake manifold. There are four screws at the bottom of the carb (float bowl) that you will have to remove to get to the jets. Good luck!

Harley sportster won't accelerate after warm... Idles fine top end is fine

Hi Anonymous, if you have a carburator the usual suspects are:
1. Damaged or restricted fuel tank venting system (gas cap).
2. Inlet system air leak.
3. Vacuum piston malfunction.
4. Accelerator pump leaking or no output.
5. Plugged bowl vent.
6. Fuel level (float chamber) too low.
7. Restriccted fuel supply passages.
8. Plugged jets or passages.
9. Worn or damaged needle or needle jet.
10. Enrichner valve not seated or leaking.
Good luck

Cherryvalleytoolmaker@msn.comHow do I get more power out of a 2003 XLH-883. Can you do jet work or purchace a new carb that is adjustable?

depending on what you want to spend , what you can do yourself it varies.

new hi-flow air filter and exhaust will add a few horses but you will also need a carb adjustment to go with that
new cams will also add to your output

98 Sportster 883. starts & w/ choke, won't take throttle or choke off w/o stalling. Bike sat for a long time (years). Used Gumout to clean carb b4 pulling tank, cleaning & put fresh fuel -...

No, nothing else to check. You need to completely disassemble the carb and clean it out. When gasoline left in the float bowl evaporated, it left behind the gummy additives that the refinery puts in the gasoline. This mess has clogged the jets and small passageways in the carb. The reason it runs with the "choke" out is that it is not a real "choke" but rather an "enricher circuit". It has it's own air passageway and fuel metering "jet" in the float bowl.

Good Luck

How do you adjust the idle on a 2005 XL 883 sportster

If it's got the original carburetor, there is a screw at the top right of the carb. You'll see the black square cap on the carb, look just to the right of that. You may have to take the air filter off in order to get to the screw. Adjust the idles speed when the engine is at full operating temperature. Turn the screw clockwise to increase the idle speed.

My harley 2004 sportster XL883 is starting, but it is backfiring alot and when i try to ride it has no power.

Is it backfiring through carb or exhaust? Has it been sitting for any period of time? We suspect carb issues. Try cleaning carb, pay special attention to the pilot jet and main jet circuits. Clean with spray carb cleaner and air, do not use wire. Make sure needle and seat are clean.
