Oil leak from head cap plug,does engine have to come out to remove the head cover ?

Engine dont have to come out,..take the gas tank off,unbolt all bolts except the two on the break side,.. caps will come off ,... right under the right side cao is the cap youre looking for!

VOLVO V50 OIL ON CAMSHAFT COVER


I will try and simplify the problem. I have an oil leak, which I traced up the back of the engine to the cylinder head area.
When I removed the top plastic cover on top of the coil packs I found oil in every recess next to the coil packs. The crankcase breather pipe was also off. The source of the leak is not evident, but it is definetely above the cylinder head gasket area.

1999 Chevy astro van 4.3 2 wheel drive. Its blowing thick black smoke, 1 year ago the distributer cap wires were / sparkplugs were changed because of a rough idle at the dealers. It solved the problem...


these are known for distributor caps and rotors going bad,also if this is a vortec motor they also have a problem with the injectors leaking in the intake manifold causing pooling of fuel and a rich running condition,on the side with the leaking injectors.check for any codes and take a look at the map sensor.these should be checked out.

Valve cover gasket, how to replace?


Rocker Arm (Valve) Cover REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.3L 4-Cylinder Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Label and remove the spark plug wires.
  3. Remove the attaching bolts for the valve cover.
  4. Remove the valve cover from the cylinder head. If necessary, lightly tap the valve cover with a soft hammer to aid in removal. To install:
  5. Thoroughly clean the valve cover and cylinder head gasket mating surfaces.
  6. Install the valve cover on the cylinder head using a new gasket.
  7. Tighten the valve cover bolts to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  8. Install the spark plug wires.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

2.8L 6-Cylinder Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. The following steps are necessary if your car has A/C and if you are removing the passenger side valve cover, if you do not need to remove the passenger side valve cover, skip them.
    1. Remove the A/C compressor belt and the compressor from the mounting bracket located on the passenger side of the engine. Do not remove the lines from the compressor.
    2. Place the compressor with the lines attached on the passenger side front shock tower and secure.
    3. Remove the compressor bracket.
  3. Remove the air cleaner-to-throttle body hose.
  4. Label and remove all necessary electrical and vacuum connections.
  5. Remove the attaching bolts for the valve cover(s).
  6. Remove the valve cover(s) from the cylinder head(s). If necessary, lightly tap the valve cover with a soft hammer to aid in removal. To install:
  7. Thoroughly clean the valve cover(s) and cylinder head gasket mating surfaces.
  8. Install the valve cover(s) on the cylinder head(s) using new gaskets.
  9. Tighten the valve cover bolts to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  10. Install all necessary electrical and vacuum connections.
  11. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  12. Install the A/C bracket (if removed).
  13. Install the A/C compressor and belt (if removed).
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.
2.3L and 2.4L 5-Cylinder, and 2.9L 6-Cylinder Engines The 2.3L and 2.4L 5-cylinder, and 2.9L 6-cylinder engines have a two-piece cylinder head, the upper half and the lower half. The upper half is basically the same as a valve cover, except that it incorporates the bearing caps for the camshafts into the underside.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the spark plug access cover.
  3. Label and remove the ignition coils and vent hoses or the distributor cap and wires if equipped.
  4. Check the cam alignment before removing the cylinder head.
  5. Remove the bolts attaching the upper cylinder head.
  6. Remove the upper cylinder head, lightly tap with a soft hammer if necessary. To install:
  7. Thoroughly clean the upper and lower cylinder head gasket mating surfaces.
  8. Apply liquid sealing compound to the upper cylinder head mating surface. WARNING
    Use a roller or your finger to spread sealant, do not use an excessive amount of sealant, or the oil passages could become clogged.
  9. Place the upper cylinder head onto the lower cylinder head.
  10. Check the cam alignment before tightening the cylinder head.
  11. Install Volvo tool number 5454 or equivalent to the upper cylinder head.
  12. Tighten the nut on the tools to seat the upper cylinder head.
  13. Tighten the upper cylinder head bolts, beginning from the center out to 13 ft. lbs. (17 Nm).
  14. Install the ignition coils and hoses or the distributor cap and wires.
  15. Install the spark plug access cover.
  16. Connect the negative battery cable.

1999 Sportage is running rough with not much power. I want to tune it up but cannot find the plugs, wires and distributor, where the heck are they located?


SPARK PLUGS IS ON TOP OF ENGINE IN THE CYLINDER HEAD UNDER CYLINDER HEAD COVER.YOUR IGNITIONS COILS ON TOP OF SPARK PLUGS. TO SEE COILS AND SPARK PLUGS YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THE COILS COVER ON TOP CENTER CYLINDER HEAD COVER YOU HAVE 6 BOLTS HOLDING COILS COVER IN PLACE. SPARK PLUG GAP IS 0.039 - 0.043.

Leaking oil left side of motor


Since it's not clear whether you mean driver side or passenger side, I will address both.

On the driver side, the most common leak is from the distributor. This can be caused by the distributor shaft exterior o-ring, or it can be caused by the distributor shaft interior bearing seal. To determine which it is, remove the distributor. First detach the spark plug wires, then undo the bolt that holds the distributor to the head, then pull the distributor out of the head. You will see the o-ring on the exterior of the distributor shaft. This is a $0.50 part, so just replace it with a new one as long as you have the distributor out. The bearing seal is on the inside of the distributor. To inspect it, undo the three bolts holding the cap to the distributor body. Pop the rotor off the shaft, the unclip the inside plastic cover. If you see any oil inside the distributor or the distributor cap, this means the seal is leaking and must be replaced. You can get a seal and bearing replacement kit from kbox.ca. Or, you can just buy a new distributor. Note: To get the distributor back in place you must align the shaft correctly with the notch in the camshaft. There is a right way and a wrong way. If the shaft seems to be aligned but does not go in, pull it out and rotate it 180 degrees, then put it back in.

The other possibility on the driver side of the engine is the main seal between the engine and transmission. If this is the case, you would have to either drop the transmission or pull the engine to replace it.

What if the oil is leaking on the passenger side? If it's coming from behind the timing belt cover, there is a camshaft seal and a crankshaft seal, both of which can leak oil. To get to them, you will have to remove all accessory belts and the alternator, remove the exterior crankshaft pulley, remove the engine mount (support the engine) and the timing belt covers, remove the timing belt, then the crankshaft pulley and/or camshaft pulley, whichever is necessary to replace the leaking seal(s).

Where else could oil be leaking from? If it's coming out from near the top of the engine, that's the valve cover gasket. Remove the valve cover and replace the gasket. While you're at it, replace the spark plug tube seals.

If it's coming out from near the bottom of the engine, it could be the oil pan gasket. Remove the oil pan and replace the gasket.

One more possibility for oil leakage: The head gasket. But in this case you would have noticed other symptoms besides just an oil leak.

Head Gasket?? Valve cover Gasket???


most likely it is the valve cover gasket. it covers the valve train where there is alot of oil to lube the top of the motor. if the head gasket was leaking it may have more signs of running poorly. also having coolant leaks also. so i will have to say valve cover gasket. now usally you may have a oil burning smell with it depending on the area of the lek but not always.

the valve cover can easily be seen when the hood is open. it is right on the top and where it meets the clyinder head is where the gasket is and the leak can be seen.

How to change oil on 90 nissan maxima


Park the car on a level surface, let the engine warm up, Locate the engine-oil pan under the car, and remove the drain-plug. Put a container under the oil-pan to collect the old oil. Remove the oil-filler cap on top of engine head-cover. Remove the oil-filter by the engine block. You could grab it with one hand and turn counter-clockwise. While waiting all oil to drain out, smear some new engine oil on the new oil-filter 'o'-ring, and screw it back in place. Tighten 3/4 turn after the o-ring hits the engine surface.
Clean the drain-plug with a clean rag and tighten back in place-not over-tighten it!. Put back about 3-quarts of new engine oil through the oil-filler cap, and hand tighten the cap. Start the engine and look for leaks. After a few hours later, check the oil level. You are done!

Oil leaking into sparkplug chamber


thread dammaged in head causing spark pug to come loose can fit heli coil to fix thread in head so spark plug wont come loose and leak oil into tube. other places oil can come from to cover plug in oil
remove rocker cover then remove spark plug tube they are screwed into head and clean thread of tube and apply sealant loctite to thread refit to head and may pay to replace seal for top of spark plug tube that is in rocker cover
one of these or both can leak, if tube is tight in head it may not be leaking the top seal is

I have a leadk around my head cover. I found digram off my motor and i see there is not gasket. Is this correct ? and im also trying to find the tourque settings for the head cover.


Are you referring to the black plastic cover that says Volvo on it just to the rear of the oil filler cap? If so that piece does not have a gasket, and is held in place by 6 #30 Torx crews. It is not uncommon for the breather cap gasket to go bad and cause oil to collect in the valley beneath this cover. You should replace your filler cap gasket, remove the spark plug cover and get all the oil out of that area, then torque the Torx to 7 ft-lbs.
