I know where to add the oil and transmission fluid but how do i drain and add my primary chain fluid

On the underside of the primary all the way to the rear of the primary just under the clutch area is a pipe plug. Remove the plug to drain the oil. To refill the primary, remove the round derby cover from the primary over the clutch. Stand the bike straight up and fill the primary with 20W50 engine oil until the level just comes to the bottom of the clutch drum. Do not overfill or the clutch will drag.

Good Luck

I have a 2004 xl883 converted to 1200 need to change the fluids. does the transmission and the primary use the motor oil that you are putting in bike or is it differant. and when you drain oil and...

You engine uses three quarts of 20W50 oil. The primary and transmission share the same oil and it uses about a quart of oil. One the late model Big Twins, you can use H-D's Syn 3 in all areas. Not sure about the Sportster. I've always used the H-D primary/transmission lubricant for Sportsters. If you wish to use any other brand of lubricant, you need to go to their website and check to see what they say use in what area. Some of the other popular lubricants are Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil V-Twin, and Red Line.

Good Luck

Where is the oil drain and how do you refill tranie fluid

The oil drain on your Sportster should be on left side of the bike below the battery around the rear of the primary case. It'll be a short piece of hose with a metal plug in it or a hose that appears to plug onto the frame. Simple pull the plug or take the hose loose and the oil tank will drain.

On the transmission, you remove the top inspection cover of the primary case to add the oil to it. The primary and the transmission share the same oil.

Good Luck

OIL CHANGE

Bob, I'll be glad to help. If the plug you took out was at the lowest point of the primary housing on the left side of the bike, you indeed drained the transmission and primary. They are both lubricated with the same oil. You need to put a quart of oil back into the primary through the inspection hole at the top of the primary cover. Use a Harley Davidson recommended fluid.

Now, to drain the oil, look for a large diameter hose that plugs onto the frame somewhere below the battery on the right hands side of the bike. They've usually got one of those hose clamps that take the "hose clamp pliers" to open. This will drain the oil. If you're still not sure, contact me directly at this address. wd4ity at bellsouth.net

Good luck and thanks for your service

How do I change all my fluids on a FLHTC 2005

There are three areas that you have to service, engine oil, primary oil, and transmission.

To change the engine oil, underneath the transmission, you'll find two drain plugs. The drain plug nearest the left side of the engine is the the engine oil drain. Warm the engine a bit and drain the oil. Change the oil filter. This is a messy job so put something down to catch the oil as it runs out of the filter. Replace drain plug and refill with oil.

The plug nearest the center of the transmission is the transmission drain. Remove the plug to drain the transmission. Once drained replace the plug and refill the transmission through the transmission fill hole in the chrome cover on the right side of the transmission.

To change the primary oil, underneath the primary outer cover very near the rear of this cover is a small drain plug. It takes a Torx wrench to get the plug out. Remove the plug to drain the oil from the primary. Remove the derby cover over the clutch. Refill with oil through the derby cover hole.

Your bike probably came with H-D Syn3 oil. You can replace the oil with this or any other oil as long as it carries a rating for use in a diesel engine. Here, it must have an API code of "C", example "SJ/CG4". Four quarts of engine oil, Add three quarts of oil and check. Fill to proper level with the fourth. Your dipstick is marked with a "Full Cold" and "Full Hot" mark. Fill to "Full Cold" mark and check again after warming up the engine.

Use Syn3 in the primary or 30 weight oil, 40-44 ounces. With the bike standing nearly straight up, the fluid level should be to the bottom of the clutch spring, large black disc in the center of the clutch. It's a diaphragm type spring.

Use Syn3 in the transmission, 20-24 fluid ounces. Check with the dip stick again with the bike standing straight up.

Where is the transmission fluid drain plug?

On the sportster the tranny and primary share the same fluid, so only one drain plug. It takes 1 quart of gear lube.

Changing fluids

Trans plug is under the Primary cover ( Left side ) and the Oil line is under the frame on the left side. Look for a oil line with a plug attatched to it. Run the bike up to operating temp. Primary and trans are the same thing ( Sport Trans fluid ) 1Qt in the primary ( fill throught the little cover on the side of the primary, and fill the oil through the oil tank. Put a little oil in the filter too, before installing, this will give the motor a little bit of oil until the rest of it makes it way through. You'll also need 1 p/n 11105 for the drain plug on the primary.

Gear Box oil change How do i do it??

Trans fluid and primary fluid are the same oil , The drain plug is under the laft side primary cover. 1 qt of oil goes in the inspection cover on the top side of the primary cover. The oil drain is a hose under the left side by the frame rail. Look for a oil line with a plug. fill with approx 3 qts through the oil tank. Make sure you get the bike up to operating temp before dropping the fluid.
