Question about 2003 Harley Davidson FXSTS Springer Softail

1 Answer

I just purchased a 2003 heritage springer classic with 4100 miles. The engine sounds seem high, higher than my 1994 low rider. Is this common ? Ed

Hard to tell what engine sounds mean, from your description. But they should sound similar.
Issues on newer machine are valve tapping. But hey, you could be talking about exhaust system....

CODE 112 ON A 99 ROAD KING (CARBURATED)

Clatter sounds usally indicate a mechanical problem (or low fluid levels), not failing sensors ...

But error code 112 is failing cruise control: either the idle cable or the throttle roll off switch; it's pretty common.

I have an 03 hetitage springer. It has 27000 miles on it. When its idling I don't hear the noise. The noise I am hear is like a loose chain ticing noise. Hear it when at a steady speed between 45

I have a o3 heritage springer also and I have the same problem and yes I was told that the noise is normal for 27000 and that replacing the lifters would solve it. I think I'd go with an aftermarket cams when I replace my cam tensioners again which by the way reduced some of the noise. Might want to check your cam tensioners.

I have a 2003 HD Heritage EFI (12k miles)... I have noticed when the engine is idling it sounds fine. When I am at highway speed (65MPH & 5th gear) I have noticed a loud intermitent clatter. at low...

Sounds like valve clatter, a common issue. We chased the same noise, with HD installing new push rods, adjustable rods and then they said it is a Harley. Not a real answer. This noise ruines the ride as it grabs your mind and focuses you on the noise. We tried different rod extensions within the lifter adjustment range, same deal. We chased for about 1 1/2 years, trying to not void warranty.

The only long term solution was to go to aftermarket (velvet touch) lifters and lifter blocks. Now we NEVER hear the issue.

Front end shakes

I have a 98 heritage springer. Took it to the dealer and said the front end shakes. Without looking at it, the shop manager asked how many miles I had. Just under 10k was the answer. He said "neck bearings, it's a known issue with springer front ends that the neck bearings go after 10k miles." Taking his word for it, I agreed to have the work done. Got the bike back, no change. He said, well it needs a new front tire then. Changed the tire, again, no change. Took it to another dealer. Explained my tale of woe and the manager actually got on it and rode it. Agreeing there was something wrong, they took it in, jacked it up and actually looked at it. Turned out the rim was bent. So after all the BS at the first shop, it turns out they replaced the neck bearings and installed a new front tire on A BENT RIM! Start with the simple stuff first. Check the front wheel balance and rim straightness before diving into bearings.

Replace headlight on a 98 springer. or replace socket that bulb plugs into. black wires have melted part of socket. replced the bulb.headlight still works. one black wire is just hanging there i taped it...

The black wire is the ground wire. It should be connected to the headlight housing or the triple tree somewhere. The yellow wire is the low beam and the white wires are the high beam and high beam indicator light. I'd purchase a new headlight "pigtail" and rewire it before you have further problems.
