Question about 1998 BMW R 1100 RT (ABS)

1 Answer

My BMW R1100RT is difficult to start. Must use full choke, give full throttle once and then hit the start button. It then starts just when I let go of the start button. Often it refuses to start and then there are loud explosions in the exhaust. If I try rolling downhill it starts fine. It is worse if half-warm, then it will not start whatsoever, choke or not. If warm it usually starts ok, but just when I let go of the starter button. Could the starter motor be the problem, using too much current? It turns the engine fine, at good speed. I have just put in a new Odyssey P680 battery, that made it a little better. It runs without problems once it starts.

The choke actually just opens the throttle bodies a little (the bike is fuel injected). Try using putting on the 'choke', then pressing the start button, but dont touch the throttle. Does it start ok? Also, when started, if you use the 'choke' does it increase the engine speed? If it does not, then you need to set it up correctly.
Let us know how you get on.

    Thanks mb50sa.
Yes, I know it isn't a "choke" as we used to have, but you know, old habits ;)
Today I tried that, didn't touch the throttle, it did not start. Got the feeling it was flooded, so I closed the "choke" and tried again. No start. Tried a little throttle when cranking, then it started after a few seconds "harking". A lot of smoke the first few seconds, then OK.
The "choke" does increase engine speed when started, so I guess it works.
(I got that wire changed a couple of years ago (BMW shop), the "choke" didn't work after that, so the shop had it back in for adjustment a few months later. Seemed ok then.)

You mension the starter, but it sounds as if it is spinning the engine over fine. It could be worth a strip and clean and is easy to remove once any body work has been cleared away. The early starters are a known weak point as their internal magnets come away.
I assume you have gone for the basics such as spark plugs?
The injectors are fired from a signal via the hall sensors (they live under the front engine cover, behind the alternator pully). You can test these by sticking the bike in a high gear and hand turning the back wheel. You should here the fuel pump prime as each sensor is 'activated' (it may be easier to turn with the plugs out).
I would recommend posting your problem on UKGSER,Com. Although it deals with the GS version, the engines are pretty much the same.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

The symptoms you describe are typical of debris in the fuel bowl of the carb. I am going to assume for the moment that it is a similar to a Briggs and Stratton engine. Engine model type and serial information is what we work with to resolve engine problems regardless of the mower brand. I note you said it was a Scott Bonner SX4000 engine. I am also assuming that you have the 18 inch GreenKeeper like this one:
http://www.rovermowers.co.nz/www/rover/Home.nsf/13a851504c93cb754a257821000cfc6b/$FILE/28045.pdf

I do not have access to Scott Bonner Engine parts or technical data but if you clean out the fuel float bowl and it is still hard to start then the choke function of the engine is not working. Your engine has a "Bowl drain" screw on the bottom of the carb float bowl for removing carb debris or water in addition to a bowl nut.

Most likely due to the throttle cable needing and adjustment so that the choke is closed when choke is selected. Adjustment of the throttle cable is as simple as losening the clamp screw (Do NOT remove it) on the side of the carb throttle control and moving the throttle to STOP then re-tightening the clamp retaining screw. This should allow your choke to move full closed when selected. You may have to experiment with full throttle and STOP throttle control positions with the clamp screw loose but not removed to see which position will give you full throttle, choke and STOP. After each adjustment you MUST tighten the clamp screw to test the throttle cable travel on the the throttle plate. Beleive it or not... the person that assemble the mower made the intial throttle adjustment. It may have never been tested before you got the mower.

If you still have problems.... this is the brief way to start an engine that has choke problems. Remove the spark plug and squirt a splash of gas into the spark plug hole and then re-install the spark plug. Just don't over-do the splash of gas and if your messy wipe off the excess so you do not start a fire. (This method always works but you occasionally foul a spark plug with too much gas)

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Hi, I bought a used motorcycle (hero honda splendor+), I dont know anything about choke lever. Please tell me what is the use of it ? Advantages & disadvantages of it? And finally which position...

How to use your choke correctly. The choke is only to be used for starting a cold engine. If it is a lever, usually you pull it up for on , and push it down for off. look for some type off arrow, or up & down. To start your cold engine, turn on fuel tap, give full choke, turn key on and press starter or kick start, it is very important that you do not use the throttle while starting with the choke, just turn the key on, and press the starter with full ckoke, and no throttle. Once the bike fires and starts, turn down the choke a little and find a idle, after a few minits, you can turn off the choke and ride off. The use off the choke is only for starting a cold engine.

There will be several answers to this fault . Firstly the exhaust sensor could need to be cleaned or replaced depending on the fuel you run your bike with . The other thing is the air intake sensor will have to be checked as this latest May be disconnected and giving the ECU a wrong reading causing a hard start . One solution ,check with your local dealer if you can run warmer spark plugs during the winter period baring in mind not to keep them during summer as you could burn a hole in your pistons

Hard starting 4 cycle trimmer, 20 to 70 pulls

I got me one of these beasts and I can get her to fire for me in just 3 pulls.
(Oh yeah?! I can name that tune in just 2 notes!!)

Seriously....

Use that primer bulb. Use it with prejudice. Do NOT be afraid of it. What does this mean? Yes. Push it 10 times.

Choke full on.

Full throttle, choke fully on, give it a tug. You should see it hit and give a whitish puff of smoke.

Half choke - Position 2 - Full throttle, another tug. Should fire and rev with you still squeezing that throttle at full. Release throttle and LET IT IDLE at half choke for 30 seconds.

Move the choke completely off, continue to let trimmer idle for at least a minute to warm up the oil and block.

Git to whackin' that yard down. :D I just love my 575ES! (Polesaw attachment for the win)

These 4 cycle trimmers need to be primed 10x before a cold start. The bulb will feel *firmer* on the last two or three depressions and you'll know that the carb is primed.

Full choke and and full throttle on first tug should see it hit once with a puff of smoke. Second start attempt should be in choke position two (half choke) and with full pressure on the throttle. Should rev to life on start attempt. Let the engine IDLE for 30 seconds, moving the choke to off at the end of the waiting period. Let engine idle to warm another full minute with no choke, then set to work!

Hard to start lawn tractor

I have 2009 lawn tractor that will not start (from day 1) unless I use a small squirt
of start fluid into the air cleaner area. Nothing else seems to work. The battery will run down before it starts. Once engine is warm it starts great. Love the tractor,
hate the starting problem. Elevation is not a problem in michigan.

Stihl KM 55 won't start

1. 1st change the spark plug to NGK BPMR 7A.
2. Set the kill switch to on position (I)
3. lock the throttle interlock on
4. Do not prime the fuel bulb...this may cause flooding.
5. set the choke to full choke.
6. pull the cord gently until the piston resists then pull hard
7. repeat pull a second time
8. open choke all the way
9. pull cord again hard.
engine should start within 2-3 pulls, release throttle and feather the throttle until stable

Flooding

Yes its getting too much petrol , you will have to check the float pin, better to clean the carb.
