Question about 1999 kawasaki VN 800 Vulcan Classic

1 Answer

I have a vuclan 800 motorcycle. Its backfiring thru the carb. When I come to a stop the engine revs up. The problem started a week ago. Nothing happened, one day it just started backfiring, alot. I tried to adjust the idle and that seems to help a little, but now it doesnt seem to have any power.

Chances are you need to do a valve job. Do a compression check on each cylinder to be certain. The compression should be around 130 to 150psi. Please rate my solution.

Backfire carb

Urals need to be throughly warmed up before riding, old technology engine. As far as the revving, I'd Check for vacuum leaks at the Carburator with some carb cleaner while idling, and if that's not it, I'd check the choke.

i dont think its rev box.(rev box just keeps engine from reving over a certain rpm) could be bad gas or water in gas, also have you checked those valve clearances lately?? 0.003--0.004 on filler gage

I cant start my motorcycle

Check the carb for old petrol, drain off by unscrewing the brass bolt at the bottom of the carb, and allow new petrol to flow through on the starter. Petrol 'goes off' in time!

Backfire

Yes, it could (and probably is) be an air leak. Check to be sure the carb is tight in the intake manifold, and make sure the hot-start isn't loose and is sealing properly. Also make sure all of the exhaust system joints are tight, an air leak in the exhaust will make a four-stroke pop and backfire like an old work truck with no muffler...
