I am getting raw unburned fuel coming out of my exhaust what is the problem?

WHITE SMOKE occurs when raw diesel comes through the exhaust completely intact and unburned. Some causes of this include
  • Faulty or damaged injectors
  • Incorrect injection timing (could be a worn timing gear or damaged crankshaft keyway).
  • Low cylinder compression (eg caused by leaking or broken valves, piston ring sticking, cylinder and/or ring wear, or cylinder glaze)

Got code505 and my front exhaust gets cherry red


The two may not be related. The 505 code is for the IAC motor in the intake of the engine. Most often the cause of cherry red exhaust manifolds is unburned fuel getting into the exhaust and burning there. This can be due a a bad spark plug, plug, wire or coil causing misfires resulting in unburned fuel being ejected into the exhaust stream. It could also be due to a cracked or broken intake or exhaust valve. This would result in low compression in a cylinder, causing a misfire and having the same result.

Raw unburned fuel is entering the exhaust system. Is the vehicle running rough/misfiring? IS the check engine light on/flashing? If so, have the codes scanned to isolate the problem cylinder causing this issue

I replaced Caddilittic converter and o2 sensor and the converter ud sttill getting red hot


Converters do get very hot. That being said, red hot is too hot even for a catalytic converter. When this happens, it is usually a sign that raw, unburned fuel is getting into the converter and being burned there. You should check the compression on all of your cylinders to see if you have a leaking, burnt, or broken exhaust valve. This can cause the problem.

if it smells like raw, unburned fuel, you may have an injector stuck open. i assume it clears up and drive good after a short warm up. there will be evidence of which cylinder has the bad injector by pulling out the spark plugs. the affected cylinder will be washed clean and smell like unburned fuel. the plug may also be "wet black" and of course smell like raw fuel.

engine burning rich need clean fuel injectors and change air filter because some raw unburn fuel get in catalytic converter cause rotten egg smell.

Spits gas and smokes alot from the tail pipe


Hi Dave,

I appreciate you asking mr to help you with your problem.
However, I am not really certain what you are describing here. Are you saying that you have RAW, UNBURNED FUEL coming out the tailpipe? Or are you saying that there is an excessive amount of LIQUID coming out the tail pipe and you are not really sure WHAT it is?

If the latter is the case, and you have a lot of white steam coming out of the tail pipe, you really need to check your engine coolant level. You could have something like a blown head gasket causing this. A blown head gasket will cause the engine to push engine coolant out the exhaust.

Gas order inside vehicle - could this be caused from the fuel pressure regulator?


If it is a gasoline ( raw fuel, unburned) smell, it could be caused by a number of fuel line related problems and leaks including the fuel pressure regulator. If it is an exhaust smell, check for an exhaust leak in or near the engine compartment.
There should be a cowling hood seal at the rear of the hood that is supposed to keep those fumes out of the passanger compartment.

99 400 sport atv seems like it revs way to high at high speeds i dont dare push it past 1/2 throttle ( 400 l ported shaved carbon reeds stock carb aftermarket pipe stock tire) when i release and punch...


Is it still exhausting a lot of raw fuel? I assume it is.
This is a two-stroke, right? If so, the original pipe was designed with a restriction (the pipe gets much smaller) at the end of the expansion chamber which caused a backwave from each combustion chamber explosion. The length of the pipe was precisely calculated to cause the backwave to arrive at the cylinder at the bottom of the piston stroke.......when both the intake port and exhaust port are open. The backwave keeps the fuel-air mixture from going out the exhaust pipe. If the aftermarket pipe is not designed right, a lot of raw unburned fuel and two-stroke oil will be dripping out of the pipe and your power and fuel efficiency will drop. In that case you might be better off with your original pipe. It was designed to give you good power and efficiency for that engine.
When you say the piston was hitting the case, do you mean it was hitting the head? You mentioned "shaved". Do you mean you shaved the head to increase compression? If so, that could cause the piston to hit the head. You may have to put on a thicker or double head gasket.
If you think it is revving too high you might put on a bigger countershaft sprocket, or a smaller rear sprocket. That might increase your speed and would definitely drop the RPMs.

94 COUGAR GETTING TOO MUCH FUEL WONT START


my guess would be a defective fuel pressure regulator, not 100% but i have seen that before ,usually a bad regulator will usually produce a rich (gas) smell and or very white thick exhaust smoke(raw unburned gas),almost the same appearance as smoke from a blown headgasket, and also usually if you hold the thottle to the floor,and crank it for several secs it sould start,if not another alteritive to getting it to start(as to check for white smoke) is to pull the fuel pump relay to stop fuel flow long enough to get it to fire,once it does replace fuel relay,and crank holding it to floor tiil it starts,hopefully this will help you ,good luck
