I proceed to start the bike and it turns over a few times, but then the battery is dead. I have a feeling its the alternator

08 gsxr turned off while idling and wouldn't turn back over


When the engine is idling, the alternator is not charging. Starting the bike will drain a weak battery. A fast idle (1000 rpm or so) will quickly recharge the battery. If the battery is dead and the alternator is not charging the bike will not run. Check the connections at the battery. Remove and clean them. Check the main fuse and all other fuses. (The temp indication may be a false reading due to other problems.)

I feel I need to get this message across to all bikers. YOU MUST NOT JUMP START YOUR BIKE IF YOU CONNECT IT TO A CAR,VAN OR TRUCK BATTERY YOU WILL KILL THE BATTERY. A motorcycle battery is far lower in power rate than the average small car.
Remove the old battery from the bike by disconnecting the negative lead first then the positive.
Get yourself a new battery fill with the acid supplied then charge it, DO NOT USE A CAR CHARGER IT WILL FRY THE BATTERY. USE A DEDICATED MOTORCYCLE BATTERY CHARGER WITH AN OUTPUT RATE OF 1 AMP MAX. A smart charger is the best bet or an Optimiser that you can connect to the bike battery and connect it to the the bike when not in use. This will maintain the battery power and voltage levels.
After charging refit the battery by connecting the positive lead first then the negative. Before trying to start the bike check the new battery voltage it should be between 12.5 volts and 13.2 approx. If the bike starts OK check the charge rate from the alternator connect a volt meter across the battery you should see an increase in volts up to approx 14.4 at 5,000 rpm. If so your alternator and rectifier/regulator are working. Hope this helps.

Your regulator may have went bad. The regulator converts the ac charge produced from the alternator into the DC volts required to charge the battery. When they fail they can put out 5 times what the battery needs. Depending on your bike the regulator may be separate from the alternator. You should pick up a cheap volt meter. Once you get the bike running, use the volt meter to see what the bike is charging at. If you find the charge is above 14.8 V or that the voltage fluctuates to the extreme, ex. 14.2v, 8.2v, 12.7v all within a few seconds. then the regulator is probable. Another problem I have found is that the ground wire for wiring harness does not get hooked back up. This is a smaller ground wire that may plug into the main ground cable or sometimes is a separate lead connected to the battery. This will fry an entire system.

I won't say its an alternator problem because the alternator only charges the battery when its on, And it should start with the jump cables even if the battery and the alternator are bad. your Issue is not clear. Does the car start when you jump it ?

Sounds like an alternator or charging problem.
Check to see if you are getting around 14v on your battery with the engine running.
If not you will have to investigate your alternator etc.

While riding, the motorcycle sputtered and died. When I got it home, it started right up after being on the charger for a few hours. What could cause the battery to drain like that?


There could be one of the two reasons for this. One. The battery is dead. Unlikely as after charging for some time it holds enough charge to start the bike. Two. The alternator could be faulty and is not charging the battery. So, when you put it on charge, the battery gets charged enough to start the bike. Please have the alternator rectified.

P-reg 96 escort, my battery is dead after only a few hours however when the car is running (after jump starting it) the immobilisor light comes on for about a minute, then starts to flash every 3 seconds....


Bad Alternator.
After Starting or Jumping your vehicle: Remove the Negative Cable from the Battery.
If the Engine dies or runs really rough it is a bad Alternator.
The Battery Starts the Engine and runs nominal operations. The Alternator runs the Engine after it is Started by the Battery.
If the Engine does not die or runs really rough after removing the Negative Cable, then you have a malfunctioning Battery.

Sounds like you are not getting a charge from the alternator. You need to check battery voltage with a meter with the engine off, key off. Then again with it running, and the voltage should increase. If not, it's not charging.

Wont start


got a charger and it ended up being a dead battery.---- If that's the original battery, it's probably toast. You'll probably do well to search for a replacement at this point. Bike batteries are generally considered short-lived. The longest lasting battery I ever had in a bike went 9 years*. But that's so far away from a normal lifespan it's almost ridiculous. I suppose the average is more like 4-6 years but the modern, Maintenance-Free types seem the best.
