My TRX has been layed up for 8 years. When hitting the start button, all that happens is series of clicks coming from the starter solenoid. The starter does not turn. Can you help. David Edwards

Hi David, I've heard this noise when my TRX has run out of gas on a couple of occasions. After refilling it and then pressing the starter 5 or 6 times with the gas tap on PRIME it has started. Leave about 15 seconds between each try on the starter button.

03 Grizzly 660 hit the start button the solenoid clicks and starter makes a whirring noise anybody come across this ?

Starter pinion gear not engaging. Motor is turning but gear is not transmitting the energy to motor for start purposes.

Make sure battery is fully charged and try to start - if nada replace starter.

Check your starter solenoid. You can trace it by following the power wire from the battery to the small solenoid block that contains a 30 amp fuse. You can bridge the posts on the solenoid by using needle nose pliers or whatever else you may have. If it starts up or you hear the starter run, you have a bad starter solenoid.

My car wont start,

Rap it anywhere on the large casing the starter motor sits in. Have someone try to start it while you stand by engine. Does the click come from the smaller solenoid mounted on the starter? If it does, hit the starter, (not the smaller roundish solenoid) and see if it works. If it does, the starter motor is starting to fail. If nothing happens, the starter will likely need to come off for testing, but first check battery connections for being clean and tight, and check if the big cable on the starter is tightened down. Most parts stores will test starters for free.

Use a volt meter and see how many volts (if any) youre getting at the starter when you hit the button. If youre not getting any, then the solenoid is bad. If you are, then the starter motor is fragged,or the motor is locked up,or hydrolocked. Try pulling the spark plugs out and see if it turns over.

Well the good news is the click indicates the switch is working, when you press the switch the 2poles on the solenoide are joined together alowing the current to the starter, bridge the wires at the solenoide this should put power directly to the starter you wont need to press the start switch, if the engine does not turn over check the connections to both the battery and starter motor,

The starter goes on intermittanly, some times turn key up to 50 times before run, other times at the first try. Is it the starter or the solenoid?

If you hear a loud click the solenoid is working.
Whan happen sis the brushes wear and the carbon gets between the contacts on the commutator of the motor. If you hit thr starter with a hammer and it starts... replace it. And at going on 12 years old it's not a bad idea anyway. the new starter should come with a new solenoid

When I push the starter button the solenoid clicks, starter does nothing.if I cross the 2 threaded bolts that extend out from the solenoid the starter engages? I just replaced the solenoid and at first it...

Just because it's new, doesn't mean it works.
This is why cars get recalled.

The iron-clan test of a non-working solenoid is to cross the relay terminals. If you do and it starts.. it's bad.

Take it back. you purchased a dud. It happens.

Harley davidson dyna, when hitting the starter button you here the relay click but does not turn over and if you repeatily hit the starter button it will start...relay? or selenoid? starter....

First things first...how new is your battery? A weak battery will do this. If your battery is new (no more than 5 years old), the starter solenoid is bad.

Check the battery voltage first. If that is within spec, replace the solenoid.

You have to check the starter motor, prolly the brushes are gone . Also check the connections from battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter.

Good Luck.
