2002 vtx 1800.want to run single front brake.where do i drill the piston bores so all 3 brake pistons work.

The easeist way is to make a junction on the brake line so the 1 line hooks to both hose fittings. this will do what you want and you don't have to come up with some kind of cap to cap off the unused hook up.

Change front brake pads, 2002 FXD


For 2002 DYNA to replace front brake pads FIRST remove the front master cylinder reservoir cap because as the pistons are pushed back into the caliper the fluid level may rise and you will need to see this and may have to remove some excess fluid, the3n loosen but do not remove both (12 pt/0.25 in.) pad pins, remove both 10 mm caliper mounting bolts, detach and remove the caliper from the front forks and brake disc, pry the pads back to force all four caliper pistons fully into their bores, with the pistons retracted, remove the pad pins and brake pads. The front left, front right (if present as not present on all motorcycles) and the rear brake calipers use the same exact brake pad set. On the right side of the vehicle, the pad with the two tabs installs on the inboard side of the caliper and on the left side the pad with the two tabs installs on the outboard side of the caliper. Install new brakepads into caliper with the curved portion of the pad facing the rear of the motorcycle, loosely install the pad pins until you hear an audible click, attach the caliper to the front fork, on models with dual front calipers check the alignment of the brake discs to the calipers. Loosen the axle pinch bolt nuts, tighten the axle nut to the proper torque, insert a 7/16 in. drill bit through the hole in the axle as far as it will go so that the contact point will have the edge of the drill bit touching the edge of the fork leg, place the caliper over the brake disc with the bleeder valve facing upwards, loosely install the long 12 pt/10 mm mounting bolt into the top hole on the fork leg, install the short 12 pt/10 mm mounting bolt into the bottom hole on the fork leg, tighten the bottom mounting bolt to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm), final tighten the top mounting bolt to 28-38 ft-lbs (38.51.5 Nm), final tighten both pad pins to 180-200 in-lbs (20.3-22.6 Nm)., on models with dual front calipers, tighten the pinch bolt nuts while holding the slider against the 7/16 drill bit if necessary, remove the drill bit, pump the brake hand lever to move the pistons out until they contact both brake pads, verify the piston location against the pads and if the front wheel is off the ground, rotate it to check for excessive brake pad drag, check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder and fill it to the proper level if necessary using D.O.T. 5 SILICONE BRAKE FLUID, install the master cylinder reservoir cap and tighten its cap screws to 6-8 in-lbs (0.7-0.9 Nm), turn ignition switch ON pump the brake hand lever to verify operation of the brake lamp, test the brakes, test ride the motorcycle and if the brakes feel soft or spongy, bleed the system until you get a firm/hard brake lever and avoid making hard stops for the first 100 miles (160 km) to allow the new brake pads to become conditioned to the brake disc(s).

Have taken apart but cant get new or old pads back on now. not enough space and part that should move back to make space wont seems to be jammed or siezed. have tried letting out brake fluid but didnt...


  • To install: Front
  1. Compress the piston of the disc brake caliper.
  2. Install the brake pads and caliper assembly.
  3. Lubricate the guide pin. Tighten the guide pin to 16-23 ft. lbs. (22-31 Nm).

REAR :
  1. Pull out the pad springs and then remove the pads and shims.

To install:

  1. Clean the piston end of the caliper body and the area around the pin holes. Be careful not to get oil on the rotor.
  2. Carefully turn the piston clockwise back into the caliper body (this can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers). Take care not to damage the piston boot.
  3. Coat the pad contact area on the mounting support with a silicone based grease.
A special tool is available to rotate the caliper piston

Do not press the piston into the bore as performed on the front disc brakes. Due to the parking brake mechanism, the caliper piston must be turned into the bore.

Need help changing brake pads and routers on 2003


Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1/2 full. Discard the removed fluid.
  1. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.
    1. Remove or disconnect the following:
    2. Front brake caliper guide pin bolts
    • Brake caliper by slowly sliding it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.
    1. If necessary, compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.
    2. Outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.
    • Inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity
  • To install:
    1. Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.
    2. If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.
    3. Install or connect the following:
      • New inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.
      • Outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly
      • Brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter
      • Caliper guide pin bolts and torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 2002–04 models or 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) on 2005 models
      • Front. Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.
    4. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road-test the vehicle.

    For the rotors:

    Hi I am doing a simpile head & cylinder inspection. Just bought the bike smoking bad. The cylinder & piston are damaged. I will be replacing piston rings & doing a bore job to match new piston....


    The diagram below should work for you. Put the piston on TDC. the OHC cam gear will have a single mark or may have two marks, see below. Be certain the front side of the chain is taut when mounting the gear. The cam chain tensioner keeps the back side taut.

    The caliper is pushing more pressure to one piston. Try tearing the caliper apart and replacing the seals and cleaning it out. Changing the brake fluid while your at it wouldn't hurt.

    How do i replace the front caliper seal on 06 malibu maxx??????


    while the seals in the calipers are replaceable, its probably easier just to get a new/re manufactured caliper. if for any reason the seals don't work perfectly you could lose control of the vehicle when attempting to stop. with that said i'll try to explain the best i can how to replace the seals in the calipers for that vehicle.

    1. jack up the front of the vehicle, place on jackstands and remove the front wheels, make sure the parking brake is on
    2. unbolt the caliper and unbolt the brake line from the caliper and take caliper to a clean bench
    3. remove the dust boot retaining ring on the caliper that holds the boot to the caliper itself
    4. using a blowgun with a rubber tip apply low pressure compressed air where the brake line was bolted to the caliper to push the piston out of the bore (be carefull and ready because the piston may shoot out with some force)
    5. when the piston comes out you will need to replace the dust boot and the seal so remove the boot and seal carefully so you don't scratch the piston ( the seal is actually in the caliper piston bore hole)and throw out the old seal and boot.
    6. inspect all the surfaces and make sure there are no imperfections at all on the piston, the piston bore, or the caliper, if the surfaces are marred in anyway, replace the caliper, if they are good, using brake cleen and compressed air clean all parts then dry them
    7. get the new seal and lubricate with DOT 3 brake fluid
    8. install new seal into the caliper bore
    9. apply a thin coat of DOT 3 brake fluid to the piston itself
    10. install bottom half the the caliper piston into the caliper bore.
    11. install new dust boot seal onto the piston
    12. compress the piston to the bottom of the caliper bore
    13. fully seat the dust boot seal into the caliper and install retaining ring
    14. reinstall on vehicle (make sure to use a NEW copper washer on the brake line to caliper fitting) and bleed the braking system while checking for leaks.

    repeat process for the other side.

    if the caliper leaks at all from the piston after seal replacement, replace the caliper.

    make sure you properly bleed the brakes before attempting to drive your car.
