Question about 2001 Yamaha V Star 1100 Classic

1 Answer

The window does not seem to show the oil level. However, the oil light stays on. Do I add more oil or just take it to a dealer or both. Bike runs fine.

If you are down on oil it would be a good time to go to the dealer and have them do an oil and filter change while you watch and ask questions. Then you can confidently do it yourself in the future. Please rate my answer. Thanks.

When You Turn The Switch To The On Position. The Oil Light Should Be On This Basicly Shows That Bulb Is Good. When Engine Starts And Is Running The Light Should Go Out Immediatly Indicating Oil Pressure. If The Light Does Not Go Out Shut Engine Off Immediatly And Investigate.OIL Level , SENDING UNIT, Loose Wire At SENDING UNIT.

When changing the oil where should the oil leves be in the glass indicator and does the bike need to be up right ir on the kick stand

The oil level should be in the upper 1/3 of the window when you are done. the bike needs to be straight upright. after you have added the new oil, run the engine for 1 minute and then shut it off. Let the oil settle ( about 2 minutes ) and then check the level. Add until the level is in the upper 1/3 of the window.

Can you help with a 2006 heritage springer, 88c, I did my own 10,000 mile oil change, crank, and trani. The fluid level in the oil tank is well above the add level. Dealer gave me all required oil and...

Dealer's usually tell you the amount you need if the bike is completely empty. Take a turkey baster and remove some oil, ride the bike and check the oil level again. I have seen to much oil blow the dip stick out and cover everything with oil and I have seen the oil tank split.

THE OIL LIGHT STAYS LIT AND BIKE RUNS ON A LIMITER TZR2501991

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, pls the Oil Light indicates that the level of 2T oil in the reservoir is below minimum level, pls add.

I could only think of 2 possible limiters:
  • rev limiter since the 2T oil is lit hence the ignition will cutoff at a lower RPM; and/or
  • if it is a Japan domestic model, then a speed limiter designed to warn and cutoff the engine ignition anywhere from 80 to 100 kph.
If you are intending to bypass the cutoff, in some versions, there is a wire from the speed indicator light that goes to the CDI unit. Removing said wire/connector would disable the speed limiter.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

Oil filter

To change your oil filter, remove oil drain plug, drain oil into an oil pan, clean and replace oil drain plug, then remove oil filter, pour a drop of clean oil onto a new oil filter, and lube gasket, then replace the old oil filter with the new oil filter. Finally, add clean oil to the motorcycle until the oil level window shows oil in the middle of the viewing window when the bike is upright.
