If you have gasoline in the oil tank after sitting for two weeks, you probably have a bad petcock. In 1996, Harley went to a vacuum operated petcock. They are notorious for leaking fuel. Additionally, you have a problem in your carb. Either the needle and seat are not sealing and leaking fuel into the carb or the accelerator pump diaphragm is bad causing the fuel to seep into the engine.

Once the fuel seeps from the carb into the engine, it will get past the valves, and the rings on the piston and into the crankcase. It will sit there until the engine turns over. At that time, the oil scavenger pump will pump it into the tank.

I suggest you replace your petcock with a high quality manually operated petcock such as a Pingle, have your carb gone through by a competant mechanic, and change your engine and primary lubricants.

Good Luck
Steve

try cleaning out the on-off reserve switch on tank. maybe was dirty or gummed up, pull fuel hose and see if anything comes out if not then floats in carbs maybe stuck closed keeping the needle from opening and allowing fuel into bowls

Small gas leak on 2005 Honda VTX1300R

I would suspect and look for any cracked or damaged rubber or other flexible type gas line/s from or to the tank, and where they connect to. That would be the 1st most probable location of leaks. Then the tank or carburetor/injectors.

I have a 2009 Buell Blast with 38 original miles on it. I rode it three weeks ago and it started and ran fine. It sat in the garage for a week or so and wouldn't start. It does not have a fouled...

First, what color is the fouling on the plug? Obviously the plug will need to be changed. It almost sounds like there is something mixed in with the gas causing the plug to build up. IUf the bike has been sitting for a long time with the same gas in it - have the gas tank emptied(it needs to be taken off the bike and flushed out) and have the carburetor cleaned too.

What kind of maintenance should i do to my 1989 cbr 600 f to keep it in tip top running condition

  • Change gearbox oil every 3000 miles. Change oil filter every 6000 miles. Use 10w40 motor oil. NEVER use synthetic lubricants as they can mess up the clutch.
  • Oil the chain every two weeks. Lube the control cables every oil filter change.
  • Keep the gas tank full in the cold months. This lessens internal tank rusting due to condensation in the tank. Drain the carbs when the bike will sit over the winter unless you plan on starting the bike every two weeks and letting it run for 15 minutes each time.
  • Be sure the gas valve is turned off when the bike is not in use.
  • Get a 2 amp trickle charger and charge the battery once a week for 4 hours in the winter. Be sure to keep enough water in the battery to cover the top of the plates in each cell. Know that batteries only last two years or so.
  • Check the chain tension once a month during the summer riding season.

Bike has sat up for a year or so,wont start, cranks fine, has spark, maybe bad fuel ?

If no fuel stabilizer was added while the bike sat for a year or so.
It is most likely bad fuel with gum deposits.
This can can create some problematic symptoms for you.

It is vital the bad fuel to be cleared from tank/lines and carbs.
You may need the fuel system cleaned as the gum deposits can cause major headaches in the carbs and jets. If the system is not cleaned and even after you get the bike running, you could be miles away and have the fuel fowl jets/injectors, causing shut down.

Check the spark plugs carefully. Oil on the plugs may just need cleaning. Once you get the bike running the oil should burn off if the rings are still in good shape.

Motor needs clean Air, Clean Gas and a hot spark.

Good luck!

The problem may be the gas that sat in the carburator. Gas goes bad faster in smaller quantities. Have a look inside to see if you have "gummed" up passages, or jets. Don't forget to change the fuel filter.
Good luck. (I have an 89, and it's a great truck, 300k miles on it.)
