If you hear anything when you push the start button, your starter relay is probably bad. It's located on the splash guard in front of the rear wheel. It's a plastic cube like device riveted to the splash guard.

Good Luck

If your starter is make a loud clacking noise, the large copper contacts in the starter solenoid is probably bad. If you take the pentagon shaped plate off the back of the starter and pull the plunger out, you can see the two contacts. If they're badly burned, you need to replace them.

1993 HD fatboy won't start. has spark and fuel and turns over

Hi Leon, and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty
2. Fuel supply valve turned off.
3. Fouled spark plugs.
4. Engine flooded with gasoline as a result of over use of enrichner.
5. Fuel valve or filter clogged.
6. Vacuum hose to automatic fuel supply valve disconnected, leaking, or pinched.
7. Discharged battery, loose or broken battery connections.
8. Loose wire connection at coil, battery or plug between ignition sensor and module.
9. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting, spark plug cable connections loose,
or cables connected to wrong cylinders.
10. Ignition timing incorrect due to faulty ignition coil, ignition module, or sensors " Manifold Absolute Pressure" "Camshaft Position Sensor" "Crank Position Sensor" "Brake Apply Sensor
11. Engine lubricant to heavy ( winter operation )
12. Sticking or damaged valves or push rod wrong length.
13. Primary cam sproket spline sheared or missing spacer.
14. Security alarm system not disarming.

2005 fat boy oil change

Stand the bike upright. Remove the dipstick from the oil tank. Remove the drain plug on the bottom right side of the frame. While the oil is draining, replace the oring on the drain plug. Remove and replace the oil filter, after filling the new filter half full of oil. Replace the drain plug. Put 3 quarts of oil in the oil tank. Replace the dipstick. Start the bike and check for leaks. No leaks, you're done! I use HD Syn 3 synthetic oil in my '04 Fatboy, but you can also use a conventional 20w50, as long as it's made for use in and air cooled motorcycle. Don't use car oil!

Why does the 30 amp circuit breaker behind the battery box on my 1990 fatboy click once when i push the ignition button? The bike won't start.

Try to reset the circuit breaker. also check for an earth fault on the starter motor .If this is not a circuit breaker and is a relay, you should make sure everything is ready for a start, (ie : in neutral, sidestand up and clutch in and that the battery is charged.) the neutral light being "on" doesn't mean it is in neutral. I hope this helps.

Push the start button on my 94 fatboy. Will not engage starter. New battery but If I jump battery starter will engage. Is this the starter relay and if so how do I replace it

If you're saying that the new battery will not start your bike but when you jump the battery in the bike, it will, I'd say you have a problem with the new battery. When you "jump start" any vehicle by connecting another battery to your battery, you're connecting the batteries in parallel. This keeps the voltage the same but adds the current capabilities of the two batteries together. You either don't have enough battery or your starter is drawing too much current. Check all your connections and see if they're clean. What kind of battery did you buy? It should have been a stock replacement battery of the same size and current capacity.

Good Luck

I have a 1990 harley fatboy.recently it has been slow to start, now its to the point that it barely turns over and ends with the clicking sound. after several attempts i noticed the battery was getting...

You have a shorted cell in the battery. Go buy a new battery. When you're trying to start the bike, it's doing so on 10 volts or less. When the voltage drops, the amperage goes sky high. That's why the battery, the cables, and the starter motor are heating up.
Good Luck

I have fxr 1993 and i need to now if i can

Seems to me that you '93 model bike had axles that are 3/4 inch in diameter. The 2000 and later bikes went to a 1 inch axle. This would mean that you would have to machine your swingarm for the larger axle and I don't think there is enough "meat" in that area to do this safely. If he '05 wheel comes with the rear pulley, it too will be useless as the belt was narrower. You may can change the front pulley to match it but that's a LOT of work. Why don't you try to find a rear wheel off of a '90's model Fatboy?

HD Fatboy Starting problems

It sounds like you have a short in your start button wires, this could be caused by having custom bars with internal wiring. The wires chafe, touch, and it bypass's the button altogether. I would check continuity at the connector on the 2 wires of your start button and see if it changes whether the switch is depressed or not. If you have continuity both ways, you have a short. You should not have continuity unless you depress the button. If all looks well, re-post.
