Hi Check/replace inline fuel filter. Put a fuel injector/carb cleaner fluid in the tank and run it through, this will clean any build up that may be in carbs/injectors. If problem is still persisting then you'll need to get carbs/injectors removed for cleaning and resetting. Hope this helps, let me know how you get on.
If the bike was stored the fuel could be stale, use some fuel stabilizer or drain and refill. Check the spark plugs to see if they have fueled up because of the stale fuel.
DRAIN CARBS FROM PETCOCK AT BOTTOM OF EACH CARB MAKE SURE FUEL DRAINS COMPLETELY THEN TURN FUEL BACK ON, IF THIS IS AN INJECTED MODEL DRAIN TANK AND FLUSH THEN RUN IT HARD FOR 20 MILES OR SO, MAKE SURE YOUR OIL LEVEL IS OK
Because the problem you describe is intermittent, it is almost certainly fuel related, either the fuel itself or the carbs on your bike.
Before taking it to a dealer or mechanic (or trying to fix it yourself), get a can of Seafoam (I know Autozone has it) and add it to the fuel. It seems to do an excellent job of cleaming out whatever bad stuff accumulates in fuel systems over time, especially carburetors.
try some Berrymans B12 fuel additive in the tank. if your bike has been in storage it could be gummed up a bit. put in a little more than stated dose, no more than double, run it let it get hot and then let it stand overnight. it worked for me on my v star
