My 93 kawasaki zxr750 starter motor doesnt engage when i press the starter button but i can hear a relay clicking when i do

Possible low battery--can you jump? If yes, charge battery. If bike will not jump, try hotwiring starter (put voltage directly to starter motor). If it will not turn with hotwire, replace starter.

Starter continuously engaging. Its n Starter continuously engaging.


When you say you replaced the relay, do you mean the starter solenoid? I would suggest the solenoid is duff or incorrectly connected.. A starter system works by switching on the ignition, pressing the starter button, the solenoid closes and allows power from the battery to turn the starter motor. When your engine has started you release the button the solenoid opens so no power is going to the starter. Re check the solenoid wiring, when you press the start button do you hear a click? A starter motor simply cannot work if the solenoid is open as there is no power available to it.

Your starter relay (solenoid) has probably failed. They are cheap and easy to replace :)

2004 Kawasaki VN 1600 Mean Streak will not turn over just clicks


Hi, Anonymous you turn on the ignition switch press the starter button and all you get is the dreaded "CLICK" or "CLUNK" now before testing any electrical component in the Starter System it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries. Depending on battery voltage starter relays and starter solenoids can make the same noise when you hit the starter button. You can easily determine which one is at fault by the following two simple tests:
STARTER RELAY- place your thumb and index finger on the starter relay and press the starter button, if you feel the click then the relay is faulty and needs to be replaced.
STARTER SOLENOID- bridge the positive and negative poles of the solenoid with a small screwdriver if you get a loud clunk then the solenoid needs to be rebuilt or replaced as necessary. If the engine turns over then replace the starter relay otherwise the usual suspects for a faulty starter solenoid are:
1. Battery terminals have loose or corroded connections.
2. Battery cables faulty due corroded or broken internal wiring at the cable connector especially the "NEGATIVE" cable which needs to be checked at "BOTH" ends.
3. Battery voltage, must be 12.5 volts or better, voltage from the battery to the main circuit breaker to the ignition switch to the security/ignition fuse to the TSM/TSSM module to the engine stop/run switch to the starter button to the starter relay to the green wire that connects to the starter solenoid must not drop more than 1/2 volt of battery voltage.
4. Disconnect spark plug cables, with a voltmeter connected to the battery, the ignition switch in the on position, the kill switch in the run position, the starter button depressed, starter engagement should not bring voltage below 9.6 volts DC. If the voltage is below 9.6 the battery is faulty and must be replaced. I "HIGHLY" recommend a maintenance free AGM battery typically they have more amperage for cranking.
5. Faulty starter relay, check continuity.
6. Faulty starter solenoid, check contact plate and shoes for excessive electrical erosion/etching, refurbish as necessary or invert contact plate and use the virgin backside. Check contact shoes for being loose. Replace solenoid if the negative function is still a final outcome.
7. Faulty starter, bench test starter with a 12-volt battery if negative function check, decontaminate and undercut armature commutator segments as necessary, check segments with an ohmmeter probe each one and the segment next to it for shorts. Have the armature tested with a growler and field coils, and brush plate with an ohm-meter for opens, shorts or grounds. Replace brushes if less than .438" It is generally cheaper to overhaul/refurbish a starter motor than buying a new one.

Hi, Anonymous before testing any electrical component in the Starting Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage, the battery is faulty and must be replaced. AGM type batteries fall into this scenario more so than lead-acid batteries.
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Engine Run Switch is "FAULTY" or corroded.
4. Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter.
5. Bank angle sensor needs a reset or is faulty.
6. FOB battery low or dead.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Faulty starter button.
9. Faulty kickstand, clutch, neutral safety switch.
10. Security alarm needs a reset.
11. Starter relay, solenoid, starter motor or circuit wiring faulty.
12. Starter armature or field coils have failed.
13. Main fuse or circuit breaker may be blown or faulty.
14. Faulty ignition relay.
15. The electric starter is working but starter clutch has failed.
16. Check for engine trouble codes.

Bike would not start.


If you are hearing the clicking sound that means that your starter motor's relay is trying to engage. Probably you don't have enough juice in your battery. Charge your battery very good and give it a try again.If still nothing happens then you must take out the starter motor and have it repaired. That spinning sound also suggests to take a closer look to your starter motor and your starter clutch which is located behind the stator's rotor.

you dont need a diagram. very simple sytem.
get a electrical probe and earth one end, touch tbe other en to the starter solenoid smaller wire. The large wires go to battery and to starter motor. Touch small terminal and press starter button, probe should light up (ign on), if it doesnt, chase the wiring up to the switch. If it does light up, take a jumper wire and cross the two larger wires and see if the starter engages (obviously first check battery is fully charged). if the starter turns over, replace starter solenoid (its only a 12v unit). if starter still not turning, youwill have to pull out starter motor unit for inspection.

Initially, if the problem is that the starter motor will not turn when the start button is pressed, determine if there is a clicking sound:
  • if there is, then the starter relay is activating but not engaging. To confirm, temporarily short the 2 big terminals of the starter relay. The starter motor should turn;
  • to locate the starter relay, follow the battery's + cable;
  • if starter motor will not turn even when the relay's terminals are jumped, the faulty starter motor most likely the carbon brushes and/or the commutator segments;
  • if the starter motor spins when terminals jumped, then the starter relay is faulty;
  • if there is no clicking sound, try with the clutch lever pulled in and/or the side stand folded up;
  • check the neutral switch / light.
Postback results of above tests.

I have a Kawasaki ZXR 750 H1. When starting the engine sometimes it wont start and I hear a clicking sound, I believe that it's the starter motor sticking. Am I right and how easy iis it to change?


It also could be the starter relay. First I would check all the conections to the battery, Starter relay in and out and the conection to the starter itself.

93 Suzuki 800 Intruder just quit starting


If it was the relay, you probably wouldn't hear it clicking. you may be able to hold the starter button, and tap on the starter lightly to see if it works.
