90 heritage have been having problem with left rear shock bolt breaking. proper bolt would not fit found someone put a bushing in shock i removed bushing now proper bolt fits i but shock is longer than other how do i adjust shock shorter thanks

You have the wrong shocks - they are not for your vehicle. The only way they break the bolts, is if they are too long for the car - and are not able to collapse enough.

Adjusting shocks


To remove lift rear tire slightly off the ground then remove the shock attaching bolt and washer with a special Snap-On adapter PN SRES24 and then remove the flange locknut and washer with grommet at the front of the shock. To reinstall put the washer and grommet inside the frame and put the bushing over the stud end of the shock and put the stud end through the keyed frame tube and loosely install the flange locknut. THEN coat the shoulder of the shock bolt (1) with ANTI-SEIZE compound and the bolt threads with blue loctite and insert the bolt and washer through the shock end and pivot the shock to align the bolt and the hole in the rear fork. Then tighten the shock bolt with the Snap-on adapter and since the adapter is not going to be at 90 degrees to the torque wrench it will lengthen the torque wrench and therefore the torque value must be computed with a torque computer such as the Snap-On PN SS-306G.Tighten the bolt and washer at the rear to 115-130 ft-lbs (155.9-176.2 Nm) and tighten the flange locknutto 32-39 ft-lbs (43.4-52.9 Nm). Then adjust the shocks equally with a special shock adjustment spanner.



To adjust the shocks loosen the locknuts and turn the adjuster plates OUT towards the locknut to increase the spring preload for a heavier load or IN away from the locknut to decrease the spring preload for a lighter load. You should MARK the adjuster plates before you begin so you can know when you have equally adjusted both shocks to the same position.

My 2003 yukon xl has a rear suspension noice every time i go over a bump or so


2003? original shocks,I assume.
Could be a loose shock bolt,loose sway bar bushing or end link bushing
Is the tail pipe touching the frame?
When it cools,wiggle the tail pipe forcefully up and down.
Crawl under there and inspect both rear shock absorber mounts and sway bar bushings and mounting bolts.
if it LOOKS good,have someone bounce the rear of the truck when you are nearby. Hear the noise? left side or right side?

Broken rear passenger shock mount


Quite common you will need to replace the rear shocks (normally sold in pairs) Jack up vehicle put on stands undo top & bottom shock bolts remove & replace. You may need to jack up slightly under trailing arm. Supplied by auto parts eg: Repco. Normally L/H goes first as that wheel goes off road when passing someone turning right.

Rear shock removal


1. Using a suitable lift, support motorcycle under frame until
rear tire is slightly off the ground.
2. Remove bolt and washer (1) attaching shock to rear fork.
NOTE
Snap-on adapter, Part No. SRES24, is necessary to gain
access to shock bolt.
3. Remove flange locknut (5) and washer with grommet (4)
at front of shock.

Replacing rear shocks. How do I do it. Found a bolt missing from the left rear top of shock and the shock is off its mount. What's the easiest way to replace the bolt (and washer). Bushing looks OK.


Metric bolt or nut. If the stud looks good (use a straight edge to check) then get a metic nut to match. If it's a bolt missing put the other side ans go to a good hardware store to replase or nut/bolt outlet.

I have a 94 jeep wrangler front left axle seal bad. I took the left side apart and not sure how to get the seal back in. Do I need to open the inspection cover on the diff. and take the gears out?



Rear Axle Notes
  1. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove rear wheels.
  3. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft from axle.
  4. Disconnect the track bar from axle mounting bracket.
  5. Disconnect parking brake cable at equalizer.
  6. Disconnect shock absorbers at axle tubes.
  7. Disconnect hydraulic brake hose at rear axle Tee-fitting, then tape ends of hose and fitting to prevent contamination.
  8. Disconnect axle vent tube from axle.
  9. Remove U-bolts and tie plates.
  10. Loosen spring mounting bolts.
  11. If equipped, disconnect ABS wiring connections at axle.
  12. Support axle with suitable jack.
  13. Remove spring-to-shackle attaching bolts and lower spring to the floor.
  14. Remove axle assembly.
  15. Reverse procedure to install.

Front Axle Notes
  1. Raise and support vehicle at frame behind front springs.
  2. Remove front wheels.
  3. Scribe alignment marks on propeller shaft and axle yoke for proper assembly, then disconnect propeller shaft at axle yoke.
  4. Disconnect connecting rod at steering knuckles.
  5. Disconnect shock absorbers at axle housing.
  6. Remove stabilizer bar connecting links to spring tie plates attaching bolts, if equipped.
  7. Disconnect breather tube at axle housing.
  8. Disconnect stabilizer bar link bolts at spring clips.
  9. Remove disc brake calipers, rotors and brake shields.
  10. Remove U-bolts and tie plates.
  11. Support axle assembly with suitable jack to relieve spring tension.
  12. Loosen rear spring shackle to spring attaching bolts.
  13. Remove front spring shackle to spring attaching bolts and lower spring to floor.
  14. Remove axle from under vehicle.
  15. Reverse procedure to install.

How to remove the top bolts from the rear shocks


bolts should be easily removed after breaking them loose. If someone replaced them and used nuts on the backside, it may present a problem & require cutting the heads off. Sometimes you can snake a distributor wrench above to grab nut but on most jeeps this is difficult because there isn't enough clearance. Really soak them down with good solvent at least twice several hours before attempting to remove.

I need to know how to get to the rear suspension (tower)

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION Spring Rear
Removal
  1. Position a hoist under the rear axle housing, and raise the vehicle. Refer to Section 00-02 . Place jackstands under frame side rails.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Disconnect the lower studs of the two shock absorbers from the mounting brackets on the rear axle assembly .
  1. Unsnap the RH parking brake rear cable and conduit (2A635) from RH upper arm retainer before lowering the rear axle assembly .
  1. Lower the hoist and axle housing until the rear springs are released.
  1. Remove rear spring and rear spring center mounting insulators (5741) from vehicle.

Shock Absorber Removal
Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 1. To assist in removing the upper attachment on shock absorbers using a plastic dust tube, place an open end wrench on the hex stamped into the dust tube's metal cap. For shock absorbers with a steel dust tube, simply grasp the tube to prevent stud rotation when loosening the retaining nut.
  1. Remove the shock absorber retaining nut, washer, and insulator assembly from the stud on the upper side of the frame. Discard nut. Compress the shock absorber to clear the hole in the frame, and remove the inner insulator and washer from the upper retaining stud.
  2. Remove the self-locking retaining nut, and disconnect the shock absorber lower stud from the mounting bracket on the rear axle tube.
  3. Perform Shock Absorber Checks. Refer to Section 04-00 to determine shock absorbers performance.
Installation
  1. Properly prime the new shock absorber . Refer to Section 04-00 , Shock Absorber Checks.
  1. Place the inner washer and rear spring insulator (5536) on the upper retaining stud, and position the shock absorber so that the upper retaining stud enters the hole in the frame. While holding the shock absorber in this position, install a new rear spring insulator , washer and nut assembly on the upper side of the upper frame. Be sure to seat the rear spring insulator in the frame attaching hole. Tighten nut to 34-46 Nm (25-34 lb-ft).
  1. Extend the shock absorber , and place the lower stud in the mounting bracket hole on the rear axle assembly housing. Install a new self-locking retaining nut. Tighten nut to 76.5-103.5 Nm (56-76 lb-ft).
  1. Lower vehicle.

Refer to the illustration in Description and Operation. NOTE: To improve rear axle assembly noise and vibration concerns, the rear suspension should be fastened to the frame and rear axle assembly at the curb height position.
NOTE: If one rear suspension lower arm requires replacement, also replace the opposite rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Mark rear suspension shock absorber relative to protective sleeve with the vehicle in a static, level ground condition.
  1. Remove rear stabilizer bar as outlined.
  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist, and place jackstands under the rear axle assembly . Refer to Section 00-02 .
  1. Lower the hoist until the shock absorbers are fully extended to relieve rear spring pressure.
  1. Support rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  1. Remove and discard the lower arm pivot bolt and nut from the axle bracket. Then, disengage the rear suspension lower arm from the bracket.
  1. Remove and discard the pivot bolt and nut from the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension lower arm .

  1. Raise the vehicle, and support the frame side rails with jackstands. Refer to Section 00-02 .
  2. Support the rear axle assembly .
  3. Lower the rear axle assembly , and support the rear axle assembly under differential pinion nose as well as under rear axle assembly .
  4. Unsnap parking brake rear cable and conduit from upper arm retainer.
  5. Remove and discard the nut and bolt retaining the rear suspension arm and bushing to the rear axle assembly housing. Disconnect the rear suspension arm and bushing from the housing.
  6. Remove and discard the nut and bolt that secures the rear suspension arm and bushing to the frame bracket, and remove the rear suspension arm and bushing . If upper arm rear bushing is to be replaced, use Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A and Rear Axle Control Arm Bushing Tools T86P-5638-AH and the following procedure:
  7. Place the upper arm rear bushing remover tool in position, and pull bushing out. Using Suspension Bushing Service Set T79P-5638-A install bushing assembly into bushing ear of rear axle assembly.

Removal

Rear shock replacement


Ummm do you have the spring compressor attached?
If not, put the bolts back in before someone gets hurt.

Those are strut style.
The proper way to remove them is to install the spring compressor, compress the springs a little, then remove the bolts. Then you will be able to remove the assembly, remove the shocks, put the new ones in, and reinstall.
With out the spring compressor, the spring can "jump out" and possibly cause serious injury. That is a 1,000+ pound spring.
