If the starter just spins but doesn't turn the engine over, it's probably your "over running clutch" that's bad. You can replace that part and save yourself some money if you know how to do it. But, if you've got to pay shop labor rates, just purchase a new starter. The time involved taking the starter apart and replacing the clutch will eat up any savings you might have realized.

Good Luck

2003 Lincoln Navigator starter grinding when starting

If you mean the starter grinds from time to time and won't crank the engine when it happens, the problem could be a bad spot on the flywheel and/or a faulty starter. The starter uses a magnet and bendix gear to push the starter gear into the flywheel. If the magnet or bendix is weak, the gear will not engage and can damage the teeth on the flywheel.
You need to have the starter removed and check the flywheel teeth for damage.

Grinding noise and sounds like something is not engaging. Will start as normal after one or two start attempts

I can think of two things it could be. I believe you are saying that the bike is making a grinding noise when you try to start it. If this is correct, I have seen a few ring gears and jackshafts that have been damaged and this could be the problem. You'd have to take the outer primary cover off and inspect the ring gear and the jackshaft. If these look alright, it could be the "starter clutch". This is the "one way bearing" that locks up when the starter is turning the engine but then unlocks and freewheels when the engine starts. This part is inside the starter and the starter must be removed and disassembled to replace this item. If you can do the job yourself, you can save some money by replacing this part. If you're going to have to pay someone to do the job, it would probably be just as cheap to simply replace the entire starter. The money you saved by just replacing the starter clutch instead of the entire starter would be quickly eaten up by the labor charge to disassemble and reassemble the starter.

Good Luck
Steve

I have a 2000 Heritage Softail Springer. Recently the starter makes an extremely loud grinding sound intermittently when I try to start it. It doesn't do it every time but sounds really bad when it...

This could be several things....how old is your battery? if it isn't holding a full charge it sometimes won't have the cranking amps to fully engage the starter. It could be the solenoid or the starter itself but I would start with the battery.

Replaced starter still makes grinding noise..what could it be..

Chances are, the flywheel ring gear is damaged and the new starter drive gear just doesn't have enough to engage into so it spins and makes a grinding noise. If you can, try and turn the engine over a tiny bit by hand and then try the starter. If this allows the engine to turn over and start, this is probably your problem. Unfortunately, most engines come to a rest in the same spot(s) when you shut them off so the starter always has to try and engage in the worn area. The fix involves removing the transmission and replacing the ring gear...a big job.
