I have a 1988 hertiage softail that bought new. The battery is 3 mo.old and has a good charge in it.I have no power from the switch. I replaced the main breaker under the seat and the ignition switch. Still nothing. both battery cables seem to be in good condition. What else could be the problem? PAPA

The first thing to do is clean and grease the battery terminals, and then use a test light to move along the circuit. But I believe there are 2 fusible links next, of 80 and 40 amps. But perhaps the breaker replaces that, unless you missed one.

However, you should not replace things like breakers and switches unless you have verified they are bad. That means you don't replace anything unless there is power in but no power out.
You have not used a test light to verify where there is power yet.

You need to check every single connection in the chain. Start with the battery terminals, go to the breaker, then to the fuses, then the starter, then the ignition switch, etc., and finish with the chassis ground.

Everything could be the problem. Just replacing things randomly is not the way to check things, because actually new items can be defectively made. I keep trying to explain to you that you need to change your methodology, get a test light, and start actually tracing where you have current and where is stops. We can't just start guessing, because the possibilities are almost infinite.

I have a 1993 harley davidson softail the battery is brand new and will take a charge but the battery goes dead the bike died on me to day and since then i don't have a low beam. it will run fine

Hi Brandon, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

I just bought a new battery for my 2005 Softail Deluxe; I road yesterday (10/20 miles) as I was finishinng the run, the bike shut off; could this mean the battery was not fully charged? Will a trickle...

Good idea put it on a trickle charge, however, the battery had enough charge init to start the bike initially, and the bike should have charged the battery after 10-20 miles, worth checking the charge rate to the battery from the rectifier,

2006 HD Softail Deluxe. Has a new battery. Driven occasionally. Kept on Battery Tender when stored. Problem: No power when ignition switch is on. When set on trickle charger, ignition switch and starter...

Check the battery voltage. Without the charger on it, it should have about 12.5 volts. With the charger on it, it should read somewhere around 14.0 - 14.5 volts. When you try to start the bike, if the battery voltage drops below 9 volts, the battery is bad.

I know you said that the battery is new but some people call a battery that is two years old new. The solftail is notoriously rough on batteries. The reason is that the battery is "inside" the horseshoe oil tank. The hot oil in the tank exposes the battery to higher temperature levels that on other models. Also, motorcycle batteries are subjected to more vibration that car batteries. So, "new" has different meaning on a motorcycle battery. Still, I've seen brand new batteries go bad. Take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house. They'll usually load test the battery free of charge for you.

If it turns out that you battery checks good, make sure that all your electical connections to it are clean. Follow the positive cable down to the starter and make sure this connection is good as well.

The flickering lights tells me that you either have an internal short in the battery or a very bad electical connection to the battery somewhere. Good Luck.
